I have been invited to join the Knights of Columbus and am giving it serious thought, but I have no idea what they do or why they exist. What would I contribute to their organization? What would they contribute to my personal formation? Can anyone with some experience in this area fill me in on them?

It depends
a lot on the KofC activities at your parish. If you'll be with a group of great guys, you'll be able to do a great deal of good for your church and your community.
The fund raising activities are a hoot! If you like cooking pancakes or tri-tip or burgers or corned beef & cabbage or pasta or tending bar, it'll be a blast.
I was teaching night school when I joined, so I became a"silent knight" and missed the meetings but was still able to help out at various events (St Patrick's dinner, Italian night, the school carnival beer garden) as my time permitted, and that was fine with my group of guys and they are a fun group to work with---we laugh alot!
There are other aspects to the KofC besides supporting various activities (likeScouting,Special Olympics, Seminary fund etc...) & occasional physical labor around the church, but your parish KofC can give you the details better than I.
You don't get the hat & sword until the 4th degree though.
KofC begain in part as an insurance scheme to provide financial security to the families of immigrant Catholics who labored in dangerous occupations with the railroads, shipping, factories and mines and they still offer insurance at very attractive rates.
If it weren't for the KofC I couldn't afford the level of life insurance I have now.
My suggestion: pitch in at the next KofC event (we can always use an extra hand) and see how you like working with the guys. Follow where the Spirit leads you.
