Awhile back, on the recommendation of a friend, I picked up some PA for the first time in 30 years. Am now pretty regularly ordering the six-pack of pouches from P & C. Good stuff, and making it a major part of my formerly gourmet-only regimen will undoubtedly pay for the POY I just ordered. Or so I tell myself...

You know, I've never liked it either.

My reaction has always been "meh". If I'm in that sort of mood, I prefer Prince Albert or Carter Hall.
I think that I only ever met one guy who liked Half & Half. I've never been able to finish a pouch.
Me thinks perhaps Half and Half may have deserved a poor rap in the past. Maybe well deserved. Has anyone tried it LATELY? The new iteration under ownership of STG and manufactured by Lane is actually quite good. I just opened a pouch this afternoon. I am about to review it in Tobacco Reviews for your consideration and potentially crucifixion.
When did Lane start manufacturing it?

Now, neither Edgeworth Ready Rubbed or Edgeworth Slices are available anymore, correct?

I haven't seen either in some years.

You're such a disappointment. Why don't you just smoke mothballs?

That's the problem with you. All tobacco has to belong to some sort of hierarchy.

Garbage is garbage and has nothing to do any self respecting piper. Subjective opinion of course.

I like half and half. Now you know 2 people who like it. It is not my favorite. I keep in it the car with a cob for an any occasion.

Carter Hall is my favorite and SWR is okay, but I prefer SWR Aromatic though. All others do not appeal to me.

In my old truck, I used to keep a cob, a pouch of PA, a lighter, and a tamper. There was a mustiness for the last two years that I could never get to go away. Pipe smoke temporarily helped this.

I have a 1/2 pound of PA that one of you "Gifted" to me a year or so ago...I have used it to break in 3 pipes...but that's it 2 bowls and I am on to a preferred blend...I don't really like PA but I don't dislike it either...its more of a tool like Everclear...I use Everclear to clean my pipes....but I wouldnt drink the stuff...I use PA to bring a new pipe to "ready" but not to relax and enjoy.

BUT I like SWR. I smoke 2 or 3 pouches a year...normally start in the late summer and smoke SWR through bird season and hunting season. I may start sooner now that I am learning to fly fish...SWR is what my Uncle smoked when he wasn't smoking cheap cigars or Borkum Riff...SWR is very very sentimental for me and it tastes good with coffee in the Colorado mountain country...

I have smoked Half and Half and Carter Hall and Mixture 79 didn't care for any of them.

I keep a pouch of SWR, a couple of small pipes and a Bic in the Jeep. It's my 'on the road' smoke.

You know, I forgot to mention Velvet. Velvet's nice enough. Granddad used to smoke it on occasion as an alternative to SWR. I've smoked it a few times, but I remember it being a little on the sickly sweet side, similar to Paladin Black Cherry.

Anybody else have any thoughts or memories of Velvet?

Never had Velvet. But I used to occassionaly smoke Granger, simply for the fact that there was a nice painting of a pointing dog on the package.

In honor of IPSD today, I'm going to go out & buy some codger at the local grocery or drug store. I've only had SWR, but was a noobie then. Haven't had any since. Maybe I'll try it again, or something completely different.

And in honor of IPSD, I'm starting the day with a bowl of CH in a 60-65 yr old Lovat that was one of my dad's fishing pipes.

I'm told that Prince Albert is very good. Perhaps you should try that one.

I bought a pouch of Half & Half AND Prince Albert. Gonna try them out tonight, while I freeze in the garage.
