Edgeworth RR is Back?

Post by JimVH » Tue May 19, 2015 10:34 am

P&C is promoting Lane Limited Ready Rubbed, said to be the same blend as Edgeworth, but renamed. Here's the description:
Edgeworth Ready Rubbed is back!

For years, there was a familiar dark blue tin and pouch that contained one of the smoothest Burley blends ever. Toward the end of its manufacture, it was made by Lane Limited, but then they couldn't use the name any more. People have clamored for the return of this tasty tobacco, so Lane is responding by bringing back this blend that is worth its edge under the new name Lane Limited Ready Rubbed. Welcome back an old friend.

Was gifted with a sizable sample of Lane's new Ready Rubbed. Smoked a small bowl of it on the way home from work yesterday. I've never had the original but I do like this version. A lot. A rough cut burley with a strong cocoa flavor. There is some dark sugar in the background. Burned great, only requiring the intial light. Tons of smoke, slighly sweet. I plan on burning up the rest of this sample and then plan on getting some in the future.

Looking at a review on another site they said that the cocoa/molassas ratio is switched on this version compared to the original. The original had the molassas at the forefront while the new version has the cocoa at the front.

I think I bought the last package of ERR at the old Richmond Cigar in Houston, referred there by the folks at the old Lone Star Tobacco shop on 1960 north of Houston ... ca. '96 or '97 perhaps.

The sole reason I was looking for it was because I got the idea from one of his stories, that it was the go-to smoke of the now-late outdoor writer Gene Hill.

It was an ok smoke, but irritated my throat for some reason. My curiosity satisfied as far as Gene Hill's tobacco, etc, I smoked perhaps half the pack, and the remainder is now lost in time somewhere, or maybe even disintegrated, sitting in an old hunting jacket or pouch somewhere.

Ok that does it. I want to try it, and I'm placing an order.

Uncle Joe Stalin would dissent. He imported it from America from before WWII. He was the only one allowed to do that (imagine that?). I think he also tried to get it named as a Hero of the Soviet U***n. When it was pointed out (very gently) that the award is intended for people and not products he just glared at anyone that dared say that. The Larus Bros were more than a little concerned that they'd be manipulated into accepting a Soviet award and it would damage the brand. This product played a key role in managing Uncle Joe in the post-war period. Apparently Che smoked it too. So the historical evidence on this one is clear - Commies love it too. When Nixon was on about Alger Hiss, one of the questions was "Does he smoke Edgeworth?" Say no more.

This one should be ok (ie it will persist) under the deeming rule. The Sliced wouldn't be.

The Trail of Pipe Smoke (1942 ad)

I walked behind a man today
who left a trail of smoke
So pleasant that I touched him
on the shoulder - and I spoke;
"I beg your pardon sir," I said,
"I wonder if you'd mind,
Just tell me what brand
you smoke - It's such a fragrant kind."

"Certainly, it's Edgeworth," and
he gave a friendly grin,
As he reached into his pocket
For the now famous true blue tin.
And then I started chuckling -
And he asked me: "what's the joke?"
"Why, Edgeworth," I informed him,
"is the brand I always smoke!"

There seems to be a special bond of comradeship among Edgeworth smokers - a sort of mutual respect among fellow travelers. Whoever they are, or wherever they meet, the famous blue tin marks them as members of that contented group of pipe-lovers who enjoy America's Finest Pipe Tobacco. Discover Edgeworth yourself in the famous blue tin or the handy pocket pouch, 15 cents.
----------

That's field craft for communist spies in America. Read it carefully. It's now a classic and it even has a name - Edgeworth handoff. That's what they're actually doing... after the verification. It isn't an ad; it's a script!

You're out of the dark
You're out of the night

Step into the light

This is an excellent blend.

It's deeper than PA or Carter Hall. Very slow burning. I think this is a cube cut. Gravity feeding bowls is the ticket. Then sip slowly.

Oh. And it's not for commies.

I'm about to pull the trigger on this one. Has anybody smoked it and not liked it? Sounds like just the blend for me, though I always avoided smoking it in the years when it was available because I like being a miserable son of a b****.

I would be very pleased as well,
but chances are slim.

I may try the RR at some point, but I'm not expecting much except probably mild blandness LOL and anyways, I already smoke Kendal Kentucky alot and it fills that niche for me.

Noticed a full 7oz cowboy tin on the auction site, it'd be hit or miss because there is no pic of the tobacco, but I once scored a small hingelid of the Sliced and although dry, it was very flavorful. I ain't bidding on this because I'll be outta town working and offline...

All of this talk about ERR has me tempted to pop open the Tub I've been saving. Have never tried it & it
would be a shame to break the seal only to discover I don't care for the taste.

In the unlikelihood that happens, please PM me and we can work out the logistics to get the rest of the tub to me.

So, wait. You have a tub of the original and not of this recent rerelease?
