War Horse Green

Post by JimVH » Mon Jan 09, 2017 5:04 pm

I’ve only had one bowl, so I won’t bloviate. It’s good stuff and I’m looking forward to the next smoke. It’s a dark, almost black crumbly cake with brown flakes. I just pinched off a corner a rubbed it out a bit. The moisture was perfect, lighting easily and only needed one relight by the end of the bowl. The tobacco was full flavored and the topping was a sweet anise and some other stuff I haven’t figured out yet. It packs a pretty fair punch, too. By the halfway point I had a light nicotine buzz going. By the end I had a serious buzz, but never got bad enough to cause nausea. I don’t know how to quantify the kick, but I think if Irish Flake were a 10, I’d guess this one is around 7-8ish.

I could see this become a favorite. I dig it.

I'll admit it. I had to Google "bloviate". Yeah, I'm a hillbilly.

Bowl 2:
A more robust nic hit tonight. Bold flavor, but pretty smooth. I don't think I could get it to bite if I wanted to. I'm still happily puzzled about the flavor - the anise mellowed as the bowl went on and there were still wisps of flavor/aroma throughout I couldn't put my finger on. One brief moment I thought I had a faint menthol flavor (very nice, not cigarette-ish). There's kind of a Djarum thing happening now and then.

I'm having fun with this one and I'm digging it even more. Looking forward to hearing what y'all experience.

Signing off before I cross the line into bloviation (my new word for the day if you haven't figured it out by now).

Indeed.

:baghead:
I might have tried it if it was named something else, but due to the nature of the beast, it simply cannot live up to the Gallaher's version, and since that old brandname is used I can only judge it as a baccy in the shadow of a giant, not one based upon its own merits -- that's a fault of mine, but sometimes I'm just a curmudgeonly purist and I hold some things to be sacred and the perversion of those sacred things is not looked upon lightly by me.

The "green" version was supposed to be a "Condor clone" as it was said that the mystery elixir of Condor casejuice had been cracked as company officials had proclaimed online in a couple of the pipeforums, but it failed as a Condor clone based on others opinion who're familiar with the stuff.

It is not a plug, it is a crumble cake.
:poop:
They were so clueless about Irish/UK tobacco terminology that they misinterpreted the Ready Cut version to mean Ready Rubbed, the sad fact is that they just don't care,
and neither do I.
:egor:
It's also pretty bad to be deceitful and misleading - in regards to the Ready Cut they say it was off the market in the 30's which is incorrect, that blatant lie, combined with the general historical misunderstandings, put me off with the horribly gross incompetence.

:clown: :clown: The War Horse Ready-Cut was made until the thirties, but disappeared. The Standard Licensing Company of Pennsylvania acquired the brand with the intention of bringing it to a new generation of pipe enthusiasts. :clown: :clown:

Gallaher's War Horse Ready Cut was available all the way up until the 1980's!

Here's what it looked like,
a sliced plug of course!

Do you know I was waiting for that post? Makes me happy, because of course you are correct.

I'm looking for something smokeable, though. I might just try the Green. Not interested in the bar or ready cut.

You could simply blevinate, and no one would mind.

So is this like condor+additional perfume, Jim? Does it ghost your pipe? ... or is it too soon to say.

It is probably smokeable and may even be one of the better offerings in the Sutliff family of blends,
but that's not really saying much.

Sutliff got bought out by Mac Baren in 2013,
and the Danes continue to destroy all tobacco.

OK, so I know nothing of Condor.

Historically, I dislike licorice and I think I still do.
However, I love Fennel and it's highest and best use, Italian Sausage.
The War Horse Green flavoring is Anise, which I understand to be somewhere between licorice and fennel.

I do not dislike this smoke. I expect I will turn to it for a change of pace from time to time.
The smoke is not exactly like the tin note. The topping is stronger when the smoke is passed through the nose.

I am glad to have some on the "trying new things" frontier.

I will stop here with the appropriate ID quote: "We shall see."
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal

I am in line with the Judge, I dislike licorice. But I have been smoking Fusilier's Ration since Secret Santa sent me some last year for Christmas. Fusilier's Ration has a great anise scent and the flavor is great...I was kind of stunned that I liked it as much as I did...My last to online purchases have included Fusilier's Ration and the last one was only Fusilier's Ration.

I am considering the WH Green...how does it compare to Fusilier's Ration? I also never had Condor.

The brick and ready cut of the old War Horse look interesting...to bad its not available anymore
