Syrian Latakia, going,going......

Post by Berad » Thu Apr 20, 2017 9:29 pm

I picked up a # of HH vintage Syrian today for cheap. I'm hoping it compares to Sasieni. Am I comparing apples to apples. Does anyone really have a definitive list of that last lot of Syrian and what it is in?

There's a thread or maybe two around here somewhere, listing applicable blends.
I have several tins each of the ones I want. HH is ok, but not my favorite by a longshot.
I'm old but I'm happy. (Most of the time.)

How well does Syrian latakia age?

Is it worth hoarding for years? Does it keep well, or even mature with age?

Or should we smoke it now while it still has all of its vigor, and remember it fondly in the decades to come?

I'm guessing that it has a finite shelf life... but whether that is 3 years or 30 years, I do not know.

It's not quite apples to apples. Vintage Syrian is a cut above Sasieni, I think. Sasieni was always a Cyprian Latakia postscript on an earlier era. It was never as good as the older Sobranie mixtures. I never thought very much of it. The Mac Baren is worthwhile to collect. It's not a Sasieni clone. Of course YMMV; these are really issues of personal taste. Crack one of those tins and try it for yourself.
That last lot usually refers to the last American shipment (2003) that was lost to all but McClelland in Fall 2004. That's gone. Mac Baren's leaf buyers may have acquired the same stuff from the source, we really don't know, but I really doubt that they had any involvement with the last American shipment. Anyway it appears that the Mac Baren is still available on the market. Looking gift horses in the mouth and all that. There is also the idea implicit in your question that there was a last crop that was produced and sold to the manufacturers and I think we don't know that either. And even if there is more to come or more in some Syrian or Turkish leaf warehouse Americans will never again see it in new blends available on the US market.

Ashton's Artisan Blend
McClelland's Frog Morton Across the Pond
McClelland's Syrian Super Balkan
McClelland's Syrian Full Balkan
McClelland's Rose of Latakia
McClelland's Syrian Ringlow Reserve
McClelland's Wilderness
McClelland's Yenidje Highlander
McClelland's Syrian Star (personal favorite, you'll never find it)
McClelland's Celebrated Sovereign
Mac Baren's Solent Mixture
Mac Baren's HH Vintage Syrian
Brebbia's Latakia Flake
Brebbia's Rondo Mix
Brebbia's Serenata Blend

That's all I remember off the top of my head. Smokingpipes would be the best place to find some of these, but most of them are sold out and long gone.

Maybe he plans on pressing the HH into paper and then rolling Latakia cigars. That’s gotta be it...
