How's Lent treating you guys?

It's been a rough one this year. Lot of people dying, and I moved, and as usual Lent = cranky oversensitive Brig. But at the same time I'm doing more spiritual reading, I got to go to St Tikhon's last week and venerate myrrhstreaming icons, and life's been really beautiful lately in a lot of ways.
Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

But you just made the 1000th post to this thread, so that's a good thing!

I'm interested in picking up a book on Eastern Orthodox. That said, what's the best book to read on it?

Kallistos (Timothy) Ware "The Orthodox Way" is a great place to start. Follow up with his "The Orthodox Church".
He has a good bibliography, so you can take it from there.

If you like to listen to podcasts, go to http://www.ancientfaith.com
Michael Hyatt's series called "The Intersection of East and West" is great.

Over on Ancient Faith Radio here's a podcast (http://www.ancientfaith.com/podcasts/fe ... stians_now) from today about an Anglican priest, Fr. Dale Brown, and congregation, Church of the Advent, making the switch to the Orthodox Church. Plus there's a little piece about the Save Christians Now organization headed up by the previously mentioned priest.

Also, today I picked up a copy of Introducing Eastern Orthodox Theology by Andrew Louth. I'll be ordering Kallistos (Timothy) Ware's books next.

Last night as I ran across a fantastic and thought provoking quote by Metropolitan Kallistos Ware. He said:
I trust, by God's mercy, that I am being saved. Let us use the present tense - in the form of the continuous present. Not 'I am saved', but 'I am being saved'. Salvation is a process. It is not just a single event, but an ongoing journey - a pilgrimage - that is only completed at the moment of our death.
After reading it I immediately went and shared it with my wife. As simple as the statement is it resonated deeply with me.

It's also good at keeping us from judging other people's salvation so much too. Lord knows I'm needing a whole lot of mercy and I'm anything but "saved".

Anyone ever watch the video series, The Way?

[BBvideo 560,340]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsm23T1MtlE[/BBvideo]

My wife and I are planning on watching this 12 part series in the days to come. According to the website this "The course aims to present the basics of Orthodox Christian faith..." and "It is the outreach programme of the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies."

Hey Friar Jay
There is also this Discovering Orthodoxy website which is an ongoing online catechesis/intro.

I don't know your faith tradition and upbringing, but yeah.... this is the way that Apostolic Christians understand the process of salvation.

Christ saved the world by His sacrifice, and
I was saved by my baptism, and
I am "running the race, so as to win," by "working out my salvation with fear and trembling,"
In joyful hope that I will be saved at my particular judgment before the Lord at the hour of my death.

The "decision for Christ" is ongoing. At any moment, there is the danger that I might turn from Christ and turn toward sin.

At the opposite end, there is the declaration of Martin Luther -- who insisted that one could be "both a sinner and a saint," at the same time. This is not the faith of ancient and Apostolic Christians.
Let God arise! Let His enemies be scattered! And let all who hate Him flee before His Holy Face! - Ps 67

Pentecostal (Assemblies of God) -> Non-Denominational Charismatic -> Methodist with deep yearnings for a more Sacramental life. Hence my ongoing study of Anglicanism and more recently Eastern Orthodox.

My wife and I attending a Liturgy of St. James service at our local Antiochian congregation. It was quite beautiful.

Forgive me brethren for using this for a shameless plug but this is an interesting project a good friend (virtually an alternate dimensional sister) for and Orthodox advent calendar, gear towards those of us on the Old Calendar, though you can use it with a tiny adjustment for Dec 25th where then it would be find for all Christian traditions.
