The D&D Thread

Post by tuttle » Mon Jan 13, 2014 10:38 am

http://playingattheworld.blogspot.com/2 ... ns-40.html

Does that make anyone feel old? (Not me, of course. In 1974 I was negative 8 )

What are you going to do to celebrate?

My gaming group hasn't played in a while (too much Halo), so I'm gonna try to get the band back together again.

And as of late my brother has expressed interest in playing and if that happens i'm pretty sure I could swindle my wife and his wife into playing as well. I'm gonna have to be sneaky and nonchalant about how to entangle them into playing with us, but I think I might be able to pull it off. However, this would mean I would have to DM which I've never done. But I think it'd be cool to DM for people who have never played before. (I'm currently scouring the internet and halfprice books stores to find good deals on 3.5 DM guide and Monster Manual)

(EDIT 1/18/2016: I changed the thread title as this seems like a good enough 'catch all' D&D thread...so any general D&D news/discussions go in here!)

I'll be giving my Chainmail and original D&D guides (see http://www.lyberty.com/encyc/articles/i ... Box1st.jpg) a look through, re-shelf the 1ed stuff and given NWN 2 a play for a bit. I'll also scoff at THAC0 and Prestige Classing.

I'll go downstairs and glance through my 1st Ed DM's Guide, and possibly pick up my pre-ban Deities and Demigods to gloat over Elric and Moonglum.

Gary Gygax lived near here. Pipeson went to public school with his granddaughter, and they were even friends.

Ashley Gygax did not like to talk about D&D.

 that's pretty cool though.

Not sure why this popped in my mind [edit: probably the personal connection + the historical implied satanic stereotype] , but I've heard it said that Gygax was a christian. I did some looking around and found he was a Jehovah's Witness. I've seen some places though that say he moved closer to orthodoxy later on, but haven't read any more specifics about it.

Because it has wizards, witches, and other evil looking creepy crawlers in it.

But The Wizard of Oz is ok. And so are all the Tolkien books. And that Bewitched show they had back in the day too. Those are ok, but D&D is of the debil.

Bewitched was pretty lamer, you've got to admit--- Mr.Ed was more entertaining, especially the commercials when Studebaker was the program's sponsor.

Oh, I knew it was a joke. But let's just say that I got a chance to deal with some of that crap first hand in the 79-83 (college) time-frame. That struggle with fundamental dickheads was one of the first nails in my "born again" coffin.

Funny that this comes up now. Two days ago (seriously, this happened) Mrs FredS and I were talking about a family from church. As an identifier, I said "You know, the ones with the nerdy teenaged boy. He's the kind of kid who would have played D&D back in the day." With that description, she understood exactly who I meant.
