Gentlemen,

Would anyone care to suggest a good value ~$40 non-bourbon American whiskey for serving to guests over the holidays? I'm more of a scotch drinker myself, but some folks are put off by the stuff. Thank you!

Know Creek keeps most people happy. So does Buffalo Trace. I prefer Elijah Craig and it's cheaper, too.

Oh, snap. I read bourbon. Disregard and my apologies.

Know Creek Rye? Old Overholt?

Jack Daniels.

Check local distilleries in your area. Small whiskey businesses are great to support.

George Dickel Rye! It has a 95% rye grain bill so It's a genuine rye. It's an easy sipping, great tasting. non bourbon, American whiskey. Old Overholt is a rye I keep in a flask this time of year. It's cheap and tastes good if I just feel like a sip of something. I grew up five minutes up the road from the original Overholt Distillery so it holds a place in my heart.

To be a Bourbon a mash must contain at minimum 51% corn. There is also a minimum amount of aging to separate bourbon from white whiskey if I'm not mistaken. Most, if not all, Tennessee Whiskeys are bourbons by definition. To be a true Tennessee Whiskey, a bourbon must also be charcoal mellowed. This means it has been strained through charcoal to strip out any impurities after distillation.

All Tennessee Whiskeys are bourbons, but not all bourbons are Tennessee Whiskeys.

I've said it before but it bears repeating, Canadian Club 100% Rye is excellent as well as JP Wisers for a good non-bourbon.
