Friend loaned me his spare kayak till I can get my own. Had fun at a local pond this morning. Released a bunch and kept the ones that swallowed the hook. Fun morning and my arms are reminding me that it has been awhile since I went paddling.

Heading out tomorrow morning to fish for red fish off of the salt flats here. Very excited. Hopefully will post some pics this time tomorrow.

Oh man. Sounds awesome. I just got done listening to the Orvis podcast where they featured an interview with a guide in Beaufort.

Did I know you were in Charleston? My wife and I have spent a fair amount of time in Charleston, Beaufort, and points in between. I graduated from Columbia International University in 2002, we spent a lot of time on the coast during our time there.

I wish fly fishing for reds had been a thing when I lived in Myrtle Beach 25 years ago.

I have become addicted to this whole kayak fishing thing. Been hitting my local pond every chance I get and have been getting limits each time.

Sunday I was on the water for nearly 6 hours. Fishing from shore this time of year is a bother with all the weeds this pond holds, but out in a kayak I can get to the few open areas and work the border of the weed beds to my hearts content.

Trout are easy pickings here. They will grab most anything you toss in the water. I have been getting schooled by the bass in this pond though. I can see them, but getting them to take the bait is another story. I made multiple attempts to get a hog to bite on Sunday with no luck. This pig was over 6 pounds easy and while it was showing some interest in my offerings, it would not bite. Perhaps when the water warms up a little more or if I change colors next trip. This pond has clear water which makes things a challenge.

Scored a full limit of trout with another 15-20 released, a few bluegill, and a couple perch which I did not know were in there till I caught one.

Saving my me money for a good angling kayak now.

Experienced a "first" for me tonight.

Caught a catfish on a surface fly. That was fun.

It was too nice to be at home this evening so we took the kids up to the little lake here in town. I caught maybe 8-10 crappie on a little green/white streamer in by the cattails. It got to be bedtime and Mrs. Gabriel graciously took the kids back home and left me to fish for a bit on my own. Unfortunately as soon as they left I tangled up on some cattails and lost my streamer and tippet.

By the time I got it all re-tied my window was pretty well past for that school of crappie. Also my other streamers were in the car... I tied on one of FredS little humpy flies (I forget what they're called) and played with the bluegill while it got dark. By the time Mrs. Gabriel was on her way back for me it was quite dark. I was casting blind and trying to land in the moonlight on the lake so I could see the ripples. Got a big hit and managed to land it after decent fight (all in the dark) only to find a little/medium sized catfish. What? crazy. ton of fun though.

So what do folks use to catch those things with?

I'll be going fishing soon too. Taking my youngest to catch his first fish.

After gear, licenses, fuel, time etc

I find it much easier just to purchase my fish anymore.

Yeah. It's also easier to stay home and masturbate than it is to find a girl, fall in love, and marry if all you want is to get off.

I was just going to reply with the glory of our primal hunter gatherer social instinct. But this is a good point too!

I'm taking my boys fishing tomorrow at the jetty or docks. Going to use anchovies, muscles and squid pieces for bait and see what bites.
