Too bad it’s a wet fly (nice wing by the way).
If your hackles are too long on a dry fly, just tell people you did it on purpose because it’s a “spider.”

I used to hunt birds with a good friend farmer in Kansas. Once, after I missed a pretty easy shot, he put his arm over my shoulders and said, “You know Steve, if a man hasn’t had time to work on his shooting he should probably spend a little time working on his excuses.”

As you can see, I’ve taken his advice to heart.

It was all those tyers at the FlyFishing show...I got motivated...

I got demotivated. Those professional guys and gals make awesome stuff and make it look effortless. I know it's what they do, and we were there early while their benches and boxes were neatly arranged, but dang man. We watched one guy tie a fantastic little foam beetle while was explaining his materials and carrying on two different conversations. He was perfectly at ease and in no hurry but he still made that bug in maybe 4 minutes. It takes me that long to put a bead on a hook.

I am sitting in on a conference call that has nothing to do with me...so I re-read a bunch of this thread and I can't believe how helpful is to see the pics and hear the guidance from FredS and DurangoPipe. Some of the observations...and the examples from Gabriel and Dlibbon and Judge Rusty and Jim and others. I love this thread!

I think I've mentioned before how distilled the participants of this thread are, but it bears repeating. Evidently, there are perhaps 50-80 Christian Pipe Smokers in the world who like to participate in internet forums. Of those people, there seems to be about a half-dozen or so who tie flies. At the end of it, we're all pretty much the same person. That's why there's never been a disagreement here. (Except that time I wrote something favorable about Yvon Chouinard and DP set me straight.) It'd be like arguing with the man in the mirror.

Great to see that getting your fly tying stuff out got you on a tying binge, Dlibbon!
Great flies.

I, too, find a permanent marker a terrific tool for adding bars, dots and whatever to materials that don't already have them.

Haven't tied but one fly in three years.

I'm hiding out in my cave in Durango. Been fishing a couple of half days in that time, all but invisible to all the new, young fly fishing whippersnappers . . .

and I thought this book would never come out:







I'm not even sure I know who that guy is. He looks familiar, but he doesn't have a beard.

The book showed up on the UPS truck today - I thought it was going to be a box of tobacco.
Not sure exactly why, but it made me inordinately happy to finally see it.

Damn it, this summer I fish - with some of you guys, hopefully!
