When we finished cleaning up everything in the gym where our church is temporarily housed, I took a run and jump to see if I could even get off the ground. I actually grabbed net. Further motivation.

I just got back from a week in the bush by myself. I should have lost a decent amount of weight for a single week. However, last time we flew out it was very abruptly due to my wife's health and we had just gotten a supply flight. I was super lonely and took comfort in a big meal at night like a fatty-fat-McFatterson. I haven't weighed myself since I left. I imagine I gained weight, even with all the hiking and work I had to do this past week.

I stepped on the scale this morning at nearly 229. That's a relative high for me.

I'm now down to 198 from 226 (Weight Watchers seems to work for me, plus jogging 3-4 times a week), and have adjusted my overeating pretty well-- but sugar still taunts me constantly, M&M's and Hershey's Kisses particularly. I allow myself one or two a day, but have to avoid the inevitable "creep up" to 3, 5, 7 per day 8O 8O 8O

Mileage may vary, of course, from person to person, but losing almost 30 lbs and counting feels very good to me. I think 185-190 might be the weight I'm "supposed" to be, for optimum well-being. Just saying.

I've been doing terribly. I spent a week by myself in Hewa and made a big meal each night to comfort my loneliness be a quiter. Since then I've had a gnarly cold and have been snaking like crazy and not exercising...ugh!

Anyone trying to lose some weight?

I am impressed... inspired, even!
I did pretty well on Thanksgiving Day, but the ongoing leftovers are getting me. I seem to be on a mashed potatoes and gravy kick, which is not good for my middle.
Working on portion control and more physical activity.

You and me both, Jake (minus the gravy part--tool of the Devil, gravy is). I decided not to do the weigh-in thing as I don't own fat pants, I've just been sucking it in and letting my belly flop over the top in the best fatherly tradition. I should be able to tell I'm down as my trousers and jackets fit better.

In addition to the smaller portions and more physical activity (rowing machine), I've decided I'm not allowed to snack between meals. I have this theory that people with servants are so damnably thin because they have set mealtimes and routines they don't vary from. From now on, breakfast is at 8 sharp, ending at 9. Lunch is anywhere between the hours of 12:30 and 1:30 (can't have a fixed schedule due to court schedules). If lunch is missed, lunch is skipped. Dinner remains at 7:30. One reasonably sized helping at each. Green tea or unflavored seltzer between meals. Two glasses of wine, tops. No hard spirits.
Etiam mihi opinio anserem perirent.

The scale notes that I had a good thanksgiving as well.

I hope I can drop back a handful of pounds... and I hope it isn't stress from work that takes me there :)

Not trying anymore. I lost 25 over the course of a year and a half in an intentionally slow and steady manner to make it normal for me.

Keys things that I think helped me:

Operating on a 200-300 calorie deficit Daily Caloric Needs Calculator
My Fitness Pal Food Search .

Trying to be aware of macros: 1g of protein = 4 calories, 1g carbs = 4 calories, 1g fat = 9 calories and keep the macro balance way over on the protein side, which included eating a gram of protein for each pound of body weight. Whey protein is just about the cheapest from of protein, gram for gram, you can buy. I use it to supplement my protein intake if I can't get it through other means. You can get pretty good an eyeballing calorie/macro content after a while. When in doubt, read the label or the menu. It's all there.

Develop a core group of foods you like and use them to build around. Eating 6 scheduled times a day - regular breakfast, lunch, dinner with snacks a few hours after each meal so that I avoid being hangry.

Little to no added sugar. Whole grains instead of white, processed grains. Drink as much water as possible, and stop drinking soft drinks. Limit alcohol. Sunday is an exception to all this.

Strength training for 30 minutes 3-4x week to keep muscle while losing fat. If you are overweight you have the muscle to carry around the weight. The key is trying to keep it as you lose fat. Muscle uses a lot of calories at rest so it benefits you to keep as much as you can. You'd be surprised at the weight you carried, after losing 20-25 lbs, if you strapped on a weighted vest and walked around with the weight you lost.

I hate cardio. Hate it, but I also started walking, then walk-jogging, then jogging. I used to do this 3-5 times a week in the evenings for half an hour or so with my wife. I've moved on to heavy barbell lifting and I just can't lift like that and do that much cardio, so it's down to 1-2 times a week.
