I hope this thread pops up again close to the event so I don't miss it!
You're kidding right? This is the sort of thing local news weathermen geek out over. They'll remind us when the time comes.
Also, it is a Goose thread. It will never die.

Just in case, I set a calendar reminder.

Yes, I will try and remember to resurrect the thread when we get closer to August. In the mean time, I'm missing the Assassin's Kittens video. Won't someone please post in it, so that I don't have to?

But I do let some threads die. I haven't brought back the Sharrow Philtpads thread in a while.

Thought I'd bring this thread up again in case there were any that haven't yet finalized any Summer travel plans they may have.

If you have any chance of being near the red band showing total eclipse.

Even though we're in the red band (in Lee's Summit, MO - perhaps 20 miles south of the center of the path), we're thinking of going to Casper, WY to see it at my BIL's place. Of course I'd be able to get in a few days of trout fishing western Wyoming, which isn't a bad byproduct of visiting a member of Mrs FredS's family.

My home town is making a big deal out of being in the sweet spot of the eclipse.

That guy pronounces Missouri funny. But given that I was wondering how Madison WI might see a total eclipse this too is progress.

We're taking our trailer up to Madras Oregon (a small eastern Oregon town of around 2000 folks) and camping 7 miles south of the center line of the path of totality--along with about 50,000 other lemmings, according to news reports. Hopefully, the news reports will scare at least 45,000 from going into the area. It'll be hopeless gridlock otherwise.

Well, I have missed yet another opportunity to capitalize on the latest diffraction glasses fad...

I was channel surfing last week and came across a joint press conference with representatives from NASA, the Department of Transportation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and a rather portly woman, who didn't answer any questions, from some other administration. You'd think the earth was about to stop turning with how serious these people were about this event. The DOT guy was the most intense, stressing how dangerous the roads will be during the eclipse. "Motorists must use headlights!"
They also went to TWITter for questions from the brilliant crowd of folks on that forum. The best one, "Will the sun go cold?" Good gravy! I hope the moon doesn't snuff the sun out when it collides with it!

I have the opportunity to view total solar eclipses any time I want. My army of flying monkeys has become large enough to blot out the sun! This is quite useful for the fair-skinned fellow I am.

Can you imagine what folk thought way back when there was no astronomic forecasting of a total eclipse? To see the sun gradually dimming, without a cloud in sight? It must have been terrifying.

I Imagine some folk went blind, too, staring at it.

All the religious folks almost died on the spot. The sun was being eaten. Whether they be Vikings or Christians this was taken as a very bad harbinger. But within a couple of minutes it was over. So were comets, and supernovas and they persisted for longer. Any unusual change in the sky had religious meaning. Think of the bright star that signified the birth of Jesus.

It was only irreligious people like me that went blind. Of course we walked across the rest of you religious types. The religious averted their eyes and grovelled in the dirt, begging for forgiveness, and promising all sorts of things.... Not one promise was ever kept and so the torture continues. 8) Repent!

If Betelgeuse went supernova (bright red star in Orion, which is expected to go supernova) it would be brighter than a full moon and we'd see it whether day or night. Mankind has never witnessed a supernova that close and bright. It would probably scare modern folks too. It would persist for months and then slowly dim and vanish from the sky.
