Tonight was the last ESL class until early September. Things usually wind down about this time, as both teachers and students find themselves with an overabundance of scheduling issues. Tonight only two showed up, but I am not surprised it was these two. They are thick as thieves, very persistent, nice ladies who treat each other like sisters.
Both of these ladies are from Mexico. The lady on the left is Mika. Angelica is on the right. They've been with us about two years and I am as proud as I can be of both of them. Mika is getting ready--studying for--her citizenship exam, and Angelica just recently got her situation ironed out. Mika cleans homes, Angelica works in a local kitchen.
Mika told me something a couple of months ago that I will never forget. After class, she said, "I want to tell you something: when I first come here, I have to have my daughter help for EVERYTHING. But now, you teach me, I do most things MYSELF."
And that's what I'm lookin' for.
In search of a sig line that somehow doesn't offend someone who richly deserves it.
