Pipeson favors wearing a black suit to Mass.... He has shirts colored to match all of the liturgical seasons -- including a rose-colored one to were twice a year, on Gaudete Sunday and Laetare Sunday.

I really miss Morley. Although a tolerably abrasive chap, I am only saddened by the persistent irreverence and goobery masked as jollility that runs in your family. I can't muster the energy to kill what's already so obviously dead.

That's why I miss Morley. He'd tell you what he thought of black suits, let alone rose-colored shirting, in no uncertain terms. Let alone the hubris of color-coordinating with the priest.

Get the green wood, Wos. It's a double burning today. I don't want to live anymore and I want to take Del with me.

Goobery is a great word for it

Pipeson brings and elfin sense of to everything he does.... whether the activity is serious or silly.

Much as Morley likes to play the grumpy troll, Pipeson is an overgrown sprite.

Other than a personal reminder to myself of the season - You have to remember, there's a huge Puritan influence in Presbyterianism. My pastor leans to the Puritan side of things and does not like the liturgical calendar and won't wear a robe in the pulpit. It's sort of a friendly poke in his side from me. I love the guy though.

I'm with your pastor on this one.

He knows that he is not a priest. He knows why he shouldn't wear a robe.

Yeah, this is confusing.

So what is advent and why is it now, how long does it last, and who celebrates or doesn't?
It seems to cover a number of Pagan holidays.

Well, I'm naturally a Protestant. In fact and in demeanor. Plus it opened a crack in the horrible domination of a corrupt power at the time. It made our world possible. Luther's ideas about the Solas are appealing.

So when was advent invented and by whom? Some history would be nice.

I bet. And, to take a page out of your book, do a little thinking and research first. I mean, it's not like you can Google any of this and come back with a more intelligent question. Think of this like acquiring knowledge of pipes and tobaccos. The basic information is out there. Find it, acquaint yourself with it, and then ask questions.

Why does it occur coincident with the beginning of the N. hemisphere's winter? I'm not sure that anyone knows when Jesus was born but the bible seems to suggest it was in the spring. What and when did early Christians celebrate before advent was invented?

Look it up: the answer is out there! Come back with what you've found. You can even look up Protestant vs Catholic vs Orthodox ideas on the subject (hint: there is more than one theory). Most of Christian thought and practice is eminently discoverable.
