Re: Broken Pipe - Rusty

Post by ReverendThom » Sun Dec 31, 2017 11:10 pm

... I am stunned. He had been on my mind all through Christmas and I was just about to write him a happy new year note.

We exchanged messages often, and he loved to help me with the intricacies of tobacco in Canada. I had been trying to convince him to give me his address so I could send him the Bob's Chocolate Flake I did not enjoy. But you know Rusty ... He was convinced we all gave away far too much info about ourselves. He was private in many ways, but did share a bit about his family in messages.

I called him Uncle Rusty often. Somewhat teasing, but also somewhat serious. He was a friend, and mentor. Somebody always willing to patiently answer my questions.

I so hoped we would be able to smoke a pipe together one day.

... I'm just at a loss. I enjoyed him so much. Especially when he drove the rest of you nuts haha.

In the old CPS format, you used to be able to see how many times someone edited a post. Unless that is, you were able to do it before someone else posted on that thread. It was rare Rusty didn't go back on one of his lengthy posts, usually in some form of debate with another member, and edit a post three or four times. I used to make fun of him for it, which was pure and selfish jealousy, because dangnabit every edit made his response more and more eloquent and well-worded. We certainly sparred over a good many things, he and I, but watching those edits was my own secret way of deep and humble respect for a fantastically intelligent human being. You will be missed Rusty.

My prayers to his wife and family at this sad time.

Many prayers for his soul and his family. Such a sad way to start the New Year but still with joy in my heart for having known him. He and Bob Runowski can ready a few blends for us in heaven

Not the way I wanted to start the new year.
Rusty cared for all of us and I think we all cared for him.

I am glad Rusty chose to make this place his and that we were friends.
I just found this, and I am both in shock and numbed.
Profound grief and a huge sense of loss, already present, will certainly grow as I process this terrible news.

First, deepest condolences to his family and friends. All of them should know what a huge presence he was here on the forum.

He and I shared a fairly lengthy correspondence over two matters in physics very few others would have been equipped to help me with. He was brilliant, idiosyncratic, opinionated - all stemming from and in service of a quest for unvarnished truth.

His Bullpucky detector was among the keenest I have ever observed.
And the heart beneath the candor was as large as the mind.

I will miss him tremendously.
I just found this as well. I....

Rusty was a great presence here. Some posts I felt I posted just for him (science). I heard second hand that I confused him by having faith and by having scientific pursuits. That he would ponder over my perspective gave me great pause after I heard that. He studied us, it seemed, nearly as much as he studied pipes and tobacco. I felt honored by that.

There is much sorrow to reflect upon in the passing of our friend Rusty. There was a richness he contributed here to CPS that we relished and enjoyed. He was a major contributing factor to our well being of community and one for whom we gave respect time after time.

I'm at a loss for words with this loss -- durangopipe captured some well.

Prayers for his family and for us his friends.

Rusty and I shared an interest in large format 8x10 photography and Deardorff cameras in particular. He told me that enjoyed photographing old churches.
I have a stack of exposed film holders with film needing to be souped.
I think I'll do that in his memory.

This I did not know, about either of you. I did not have an 8 x 10 Deardorff, but a K.B. Kanham 4 x 5.

Hmm. Old churches. His considering CPS as "home." We'll never know whom we'll meet the other side of JOrdan until we are finally there. .

Just seeing this now, so, so saddening. I will really miss talking to him about fountain pens. I really hope God claimed his soul before he stopped his heart. What a loss. Just knowing him remotely, can only imagine what his wife is going through, condolences to her.

This strikes a chord.

Rusty bore the imago Dei in such a strange and unique way, at least to me. That's what I remember him for.
