Sorry to hear this. I had a few exchanges with him( half were arguments) but he was always there to answer any question about pipe lore I had. He always obsessed over getting the facts right for the record. I thought he was being a bit persnickety, but he was right. These forums are a record of sorts. Also, the man chose to live his life in a certain way, what he believed or didn't believe, was his choice. Let's respect that, because he can't defend himself anymore.

I just found this, and I am both in shock and numbed.
Profound grief and a huge sense of loss, already present, will certainly grow as I process this terrible news.

First, deepest condolences to his family and friends. All of them should know what a huge presence he was here on the forum.

He and I shared a fairly lengthy correspondence over two matters in physics very few others would have been equipped to help me with. He was brilliant, idiosyncratic, opinionated - all stemming from and in service of a quest for unvarnished truth.

His Bullpucky detector was among the keenest I have ever observed.
And the heart beneath the candor was as large as the mind.

I will miss him tremendously.

Shocked and saddened with serious thoughts. I'm one who only knew him from a distance. I am praying for his wife and family. May the Lord of Life, use this to allow "all who would" to hear his knock on their heart's door, and open it from the latch inside.

Thanks for saying this. Rusty and I met in Ottawa and when I moved away to BC we continued our phone calls and correspondence through email. There was so much knowledge and a desire to share coming from him that I felt he really should be involved in a Forum of some kind. I told him about this one and he checked it out. For whatever reason, he chose this place and remained true to this place for his postings.

He would visit other forum sites such as smokersforums.co.uk, the now defunct Kansas City Forum group, and was also known to haunt pipes.org discussion group and alt.smokers.pipes. No matter where he visited, CPS was his home, and he never really posted or had a profile anywhere else. He averaged 7.10 posts per day since his time with you from May 2008. That's phenomenal.

I don't know what to say. He was a stranger and a friend at the same time. He touched many of us from time to time, especially with his zeal to help "get it right" on a lot of topics.
I will miss him here.

Rusty was a top notch guy. We shared many PM's over many subjects over the last 10 years. He took his time in writing most of them and although some went over my head he was patient with me and never got mean or nasty with me.

We had a discussion on "aging in space" that was quite interesting.

Anyway, Rest In Peace and may God comfort your family during this tough time. I'll certainly miss you.

Mrs. Rusty sent me an email this evening. More details will follow but I hope this helps for now:

"I don’t think you can understand how much your efforts and these amazing comments mean to us. Thank you so much.

Much to our surprise (and delight-though that is clearly the wrong word), Rusty recently became a Red Cross supporter through their “First Responder” program and had “adopted” a young girl in Africa through the Canada Plan. He had never been a person who gave to charity and his choice of these two over the past year really touched [his daughter] and I. I can probably send you more info if you want, we will certainly try to maintain his monthly contributions."

When I receive more information, I'll post it up here for you all. Any and all comments about Rusty are being passed along to his wife and kids. Thank you all so much.

I'm in tears. Rusty was my friend. Not just a guy on the other end of the internet. He was my friend. My dear and respected friend.
