What was your last exercise for physical fitness?

Post by ChildOfGod » Sat Oct 18, 2008 7:31 am

Lest onlookers should think that Christian Pipe Smokers only smoke pipes, drink, and watch movies...

I Ran 5 Kilometers this morning.

At 280 lbs I'm not tearing down the road, but I go the distance.

Well, you say:
"I Ran 5 Kilometers this morning."

AND...

You say you way 280lbs.....

HMMM...

I'd say if you looked behind you, you may have torn up a lot of road...

Exercise, hmm, well I lifted my drink, I lifeted my pipe, and I used the remote while watching a movie - does that count???!

I run 3 miles 4 nights a week. In the last year with stress from my job I had put on a good 30 pounds and also stopped running so about 4 months ago I started running again. I also walk the dogs in the morning and at night, but only about 1 mile with them.

30 to 45 minutes a day walking on the treadmill at the Y. I'd like to think I could once again run some day.
Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:6,7 ESV

Until about 5 years ago I followed the following regimen:

Very heavy "power weight lifting" 4 days per week- 2 to 3 hours per session

Run 5 miles 5 days per week on city streets

Bicycle 15 miles daily Monday-Friday with a 50 mile ride on Saturdays

Stair-step machine Tuesday and Saturday 45 minutes each session

I then gave up running and began walking 5 miles daily 5 days per week while continuing the rest of the regimen

I ate huge amounts of protein and was big and strong, but never touched steroids or "nutritional supplements".

Then....

I herniated two discs in my lower back and "toughed out" the pain, sometimes throwing up at work because of the pain; I developed severe knee pain and found out that I have no cartilage in either knee and walk with "bone against bone". I'm 48 and sometimes walk like an 80 year old man. I have bad shoulders, elbows, ankles, and wrists as well. I was addicted to exercise and could never get big enough or strong enough. I used to hurt all the time because of my exercising, but wouldn't slow down or stop. Now, my neurosurgeon has told me that the physical problems can be fixed, but the pain can't because I was stubborn and suffered through the pain so long I now have permanent nerve damage.

I haven't exercised in about five years. I may not live long, but I've never felt better. The moral of this long story:

Moderation is the key. Take it slow and easy and don't hurt yourself. No pain does not mean no gain, and if you begin to get seriously addicted to exercise, seek help.

I rode my bike to the coffee shop, played hackey-sack with some of the young-uns for about 45 min, and rode back home. The last time I played hackey-sack was in '88 and I took it to 'em old school.

Yeah, old school.

They are probably still laughing!
