Can these instructions be just a little more confusing

Post by DepartedLight » Tue Aug 18, 2015 8:29 pm

Search for keywords:
Place + in front of a word which must be found and - in front of a word which must not be found. Put a list of words separated by | into brackets if only one of the words must be found. Use * as a wildcard for partial matches.

At last! Someone posts something that makes logical sense.

Makes sense to me too. This is the way Google and ebay searches used to work too. It also was true that we could OR text strings as well. There is a syntax here and it is useful.

Why is it confusing? You're searching based upon a text string. If you insist that a specified other text string must also be present in all reported search results then precede it by a plus sign, if you want to exclude all search results that have a specified other text string then precede that string with a minus sign.

It allows you to refine the search results. You're filtering the results of the search. How does one live at all without knowing these things?

Why put in words that must NOT be found into a search?

Lets say you are looking for articles about "revolvers" but you want to eliminate all the stupid references to "guns" or "pistols" (some people use revolver and pistol interchangeably) because you want better quality references. This is a simple example. Usually the more technical the term the better for this kind of search.

Another example for CPS might be this: Let's say you want to buy a smooth diamond shank bent bulldog pipe. You may want to use a string like this:
"bent bulldog"+"diamond shank"+pipe+rhodesian+smooth-"round shank"-rusticated-"sand blasted"
"One man's theology is another man's belly laugh." - Robert A. Heinlein

Because the English language is Eff-ing vague, aka homonyms. So if you're searching with one of these homonyms, if you exclude other words (terms) that help to set a context of what you are not interested in. Your search result set is smaller and targeted for what you're looking for.
