I hit the wheel this morning...no spark. I will have to stretch that spring.

Lighter update...the Nimrod is not working. The spring was stretched and I am getting nice smooth operation and good spark...no flame. The lighter has been filled now 3 times...but it appears to be dry. I am going to fill it and put it in a zip lock bag and set it inverted and see if I can't get that wick to start working again.

I have no secret methods and I'm sure you've tried all I'd recommend. A dab of fluid on the wick. A scrub of the flint wheel with a wire brush. Unpacking the cotton balls and repacking. Worst case, replace the wick

On an old petrol lighter of simple design, one of those four things are what's off.

Sorry you've had so much trouble.

I figure this lighter is 50 some years old...I am 50 some years old and I wish I was in as good of shape as this lighter:)

It is fun getting it to work...like you say this is a simple unit. So it is just a matter of time. There was a kind of grease on the case, like packing grease. Maybe it migrated to the wick. It may burn off or it may need replaced and as you say maybe the packing. I have a Coleman lantern that I have been puzzeling over for a couple of weeks as I get time. I'm not very good but I am slow.

Nah. No worries.

You say grease? Was the lighter used? I had an old rollalite (precursor to the rollagas, but a petrol lighter rather than butane), that I thought had a punky wick but it turned out that the wick was about an inch long from use. Replaced the wick and no issues. I'd get into that packing if I was you and see--sometimes you just need to snake out the wick.

Also, I've found an old lighter repair manual on the Web that has exploded diagrams of just about ever petrol lighter included. Was a godsend when I was repairing my old Thorens Single Claw.

Have fun and welcome to a new obsession. Soon you'll be scouring the broken lighter boxes at flea markets for spare parts!

I usually use a Bic. They're sold everywhere, after all. So ubiquitous are they, that I rarely have to actually have to buy one. I've found three on the sidewalk over the past month or so and commandeered them for my own use. Another brand I've always liked is Djeep. Those damn things last forever.
Picked up a Djeep a week or so ago. Haven't liked an inexpensive lighter this much since my two Austrian made lighters both died within a month of each other. Can't remember the brand name; but they invented the trench lighter back in WWI.

You had imcos that died on you? They were rather flimsy, I admit, but a wonderful semi-automatic mechanism that was a marvel of simplicity. That's really high praise.

Ah, yes! Imcos! I loved them! So sorry they went out of business.

Mrs. DP knows of my fondness for Zippo pipe lighters.
She bought me this antiqued brass lighter for our anniversary a little over a week ago:

No?

I think I'll save a bit and get one in a month or two.

I like that. Where did she score a Yggdrasil lighter? It could go with this:

A "Vertigo" pipe lighter I got on the cheap from Pipes & Cigars over a year ago has been going strong ever since I stopped buying wooden matches.
