Smitten by a shape

Post by Hovannes » Thu Feb 23, 2017 8:44 am

Straight chubby Apples.
I don't have one, but perhaps after taxes I may indulge in an acquisition.
Any recommendations?

Never had a bad Stanwell apple. Or a Dunhill. Or a Comoy. Or a GBD. Sav apples can be iffy. Check the local carvers too.

I've been smitten by a shape a few times. Fortunately, I married the right one.

What have you seen? Usually one has seen something. And that is the place to start. I can't imagine that it's an abstraction in your mind ie that the name chubby apple did anything for you.

There is a lot of variation as soon as you say chubby. Many Apple shapes aren't far from Billiards but they're rarely described as chubby. When the shape tends to a ball/tomato then they're chubby. Does it have a well defined rim?

This is a shape that I have in all sorts of variations. I think Bob has them too. If you search you'll find pics of mine with a variety of chubby Apples eg Upshall, Radice, Blatter and probably more. This isn't about brand but rather about shape. Brian Madsen recently posted some example shapes that included a couple of Apples. Any of those shapes hit the spot? Once the shape is nailed then the question is who makes one.

Here are a few of mine..

Blatter, pretty much a standard Apple shape (lower pipe in the pic) that is not chubby
Image

Blatter, very chubby Apple/Ball shape (in the middle)
Image

Upshall, and this is an example of a chubby Apple
Image

Radice, another variation on Apple that is quite elegant but not chubby (lower left)

Smokingpipe's pipe locator can show you a LOT of Apple shapes. It's interesting to see the variations in shape.

https://www.smokingpipes.com/search/the ... 8&shape=19

I see a lot of standard Apple shapes from Dunhill, Peterson, Stanwell, Savinelli etc.

Here's a very nice chubby Apple from BriarWorks .... and it really does work!

Image

.... you know, one can catch PAD doing this!

So Hov the question becomes - do you want a standard Apple shape? It might be that we shouldn't attach anything more that some affection to your use the word 'chubby'.

I don't know that I'd go that far.

I do always enjoy when Rusty posts photos of his burgundy pipes. That little Upshall has made an appearance or two before and I always like it.

Maybe he can pull this shape off because of the WW1 uniform?

Yes, yes, Burgundy pipes.
The gym rope comment sailed over my head. I have no idea what he means.

He has a thin face. You have a much rounder face and head.
I really doubt it's absolutely necessary to dress up in WW1 battle dress. But whatever floats your boat.

I'm looking at the pipe. The size relates, I think, to my pots but the roundness looks more comfortable in the hand like my bent apples.
I look at the WW1 uniform because, well, it's distracting. French, isn't it?
Hilaire Belloc would be amused.

Wayne Teipen's 4th pipe, the first one he sold that got the ball rolling, is a somewhat chubby apple shape. He called it a tomato. Bottom of this page: http://teipenpipes.com/gallery/

Why do I bring this up? That pipe will be for sale very soon right here on CPS. 8O
