2017 Pipes

Post by Fainn » Thu Jun 15, 2017 10:29 am

Two matching pipes with the year stamped on it would be ideal. I want to have one for myself and one for my son. Any suggestions for something within my price range?

You might want to state your Price range to start with - just an observation!

Maybe email Smoking Pipes and/ or Pipes & Cigars. They may be able to tell you which pipes have date stamps.

$100 max. I know its a long shot. The year stamped is basically the cherry on top and not an absolute nessecity.

Hmm... Do they need to be new? Open to Estates?

Open to estates as long as the year is stamped. If something can't be found in my range, then just something made this year. But it may be months before I can actually afford them.

Last question to narrow the solution-space: are you open to having 2017 stamped after the fact if done "cleanly"?

I thought this was going to be a thread featuring pictures of your pipe collection.

That's a lot of pipes!

And you believe there will still be tobacco around when your son turns 18?

Looking forward to seeing what you end up with. Good stuff.

I'd say don't get stuck on the year stamp... if this prices you out of the market, just get two pipes the same and you'll know when you bought them. That would still be an amazing gift.

They have a sale on the keystone pipes I am considering.

I have a book, recommended by Rusty, Pipes & Tobaccos, by Carl Ehwa, one of the founders of McClelland Tobacco, I think.

He states that a pipe smoker should only get the best possible quality pipe they can afford,.. otherwise the pipe will ultimately not be smoked/ enjoyed and be neglected. I am currently considering an Ebay Ardor pipe. But it has very dark stain, and the grain pattern inside the bowl indicates the pipe may well have a lot of "bald" grain that absorbs A LOT of smoking impurities. What is the dark stain hiding? No amount of resting / drying can prevent such pipes from smoking sour.

Try ebay and look for straight vertical grain pipes. I have a giant Ebay Preben Holm Ben Wade "A1" I bought a year ago with 360 degree tight straight grain, for $60. It smokes sweeter than honey! They are hard to find, but part of the fun is searching for them!

Happy hunting!!

There is no 2017 stamp, but Ropp has some decent pipes at the ~$45 mark: Ropp Pipes.

Nice call Joshoowah - those are some pretty pipes...

We discussed seeking help with the stamping. This might just work out for Fainn and the Youngling to be with something rather nice.

I liked Hugo's idea for the Dad Meerschaum to color over time - rather poignant that. Or the "naked" wood Pipe Fainn mentioned - weathered and burnished through use.

The Ropps look like a nice option beyond the WV offerings for the Kaywoodies they have on hand.

I looked at those Ropps and I would bet that most have a lot of bald briar, which sours easily, and hardly any amount of resting can help them.

Now, here's a pretty sweet looking estate Preben Holm era Ben Wade, that has been beautifully restored, with a wax finish. And some nice straight and birds eye grain, insuring it would be a good smoker for a LONG time. Lots of briar for a cool smoke. And large chamber dimensions; 7/8 x 1 5/8 Approx.

Its a "buy it now" for $75, but you could offer 50 and see what happens.

Here's another with 360 degree tight vertical grain and a large, nearly .9 inch dia bowl, 2 inches deep. This is a $300 pipe, and they are asking only $85....

I'd move on these, Fainn, before they are gone.

Fainn is looking for a pair of matched pipes. One offs aren't going to suit if I got the gist of the search parameters here.

Yes, I knew that, but to find high quality estates, at low prices, the best I could find were two pipes made by the same artisan, Preben Holm/ Ben Wade.

Fainn, open your mind to the possibilities. First, you can keep him in pipes from infancy. And every one of them will be dated 2017. You need to buy age appropriate pipes. But there is no reason that you can't please him every year. Think of it. It should be about him. This is supposed to be fun.

Now the first bunch will be soap bubble pipes. And they may start getting used this year! Once he has some control over his hands this is fun for Dad's and baby boys. For the next few years *these* are the pipe of choice. Plus there are certainly other bubble instruments. At some point you need to move on to licorice pipes. Also dated to his birth year, even if they weren't purchased that year. There are other possibilities as he gets older.

Finally of course you start giving him a birth pipe every year. You're working your way up to that pristine matched set of 2017 Dunhill Root pipes or whatever but they're later. There are also Savinelli Collectors that can be paired and they have a nice plate with the date on them. Make this a living tradition.
A mood rises just to have.
