The billiard thread

Post by Cleon » Thu Mar 03, 2011 12:59 pm

Post pics of your billiards and their variants. Tell us what you like or don't like about them, how you got them, what you smoke in them...etc. Bents are welcome too, although there is an existing thread for those HERE.

All my straights:
Image
Starting at the top left going down:

1.) Edward's Algerian briar. Group 4ish in size. It's almost a pot. The stem is a cumberland replacement stem. Dedicated to Hardwicke's Imperial Balkan. This is my favorite pipe.
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2.) 1967 Dunhill Bruyere 251 F/T in Group 3. This is my Ennerdale Flake pipe.
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.) Kaywoodie Carburetor 8804 patent 2082106 Lovat. Group 3ish. Given to me by my neighbor. I think I can date it to the 30s. Prince Albert does well in this.
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.) Aldo Velani Rusticated. Group 4ish in size. This goes out and about for walks and such. Handles latakia mixtures well. It started out tasting very green though.
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5.) 1939 Dunhill Root Briar 36 F/T Liverpoolish. Group 3ish in size. Has the original innertube. Handles Virginia leaf stuff.
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6.) 1965 Dunhill EK Shell Briar panel billiard in Group 4. Dedicated to English mixtures like Westminster.
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7.) No name billiard with 14k gold band. Group 4ish. Codger burley stuff goes in this. The draft hole is drilled way low in the bowl. Not my best performer but I keep it for looks.
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can you tell I like cross cuts?

8.) JMG’s Flannery O’Connell
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9.) Ashton Brindle X.

My bents:
Image
From the top:

1.) Savinelli Capri Root Briar 602 KS. Probably a Group 5. It's a 3 digit Sav so it comes with the 9mm adapter that I don't use. The biggest pipe I have. It's a great car pipe. Dedicated to latakia mixtures.
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2.) Savinelli Punto Oro 6002. Large Group 3ish to small Group 4ish. It's a 4 digit so there is no 9mm filter involved. Everything but American aromatics go in this.
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.) Dr. Grabow. Group 4ish. It's my first pipe. It's seen everything and been abused. I smoke whatever in it. Great pipe.
Image
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

None of these pass a pipe cleaner into the bowl.

Here's a billiard lovat that I recently made. I figured I'd post it here in the interest of contributing to Del's proposed pledge since it's not for sale. It's enroute to it's owner now (and hopefully will arrive soon.) I have several in my personal collection but don't have pictures of them to post just yet.

Grabow 36Y medium billiard and Grabow 84L Canadian

These are Steverino's pipes. They're great examples of well made American value pipes from the billiard family. I thought I'd post them here.

8. American Smoking Pipe Company - Mark Tinsky Natural Billiard

How is it that I never knew of this thread? I am even now the owner of one of the pipes pictured earlier in this thread.

Probably because it's about one the most generic shapes .

All kidding aside, we should have threads for many more shapes.

Generic? Generic? Most of your oddball shapes are made because the maker lacks the chops to properly execute a billiard.

This.

I like billiards just fine, but I do find them mostly boring. I'd rather see a lovat, which is, of course, a "type" of billiard. I think I have 2 billiards in my collection, and I doubt I'll ever buy another. I guess I just prefer bulldog and author types.

I'm worried about you. Calling billiards boring but preferring bourgeois bulldogs. And an author is just a prince that needs to lay off starchy foods and do some Swedish exercises. :D

Wow. I thought I'd lost the Kaywoodie posted earlier. I found it in a bag this week. I must have packed it for a trip and forgotten it.

For the most part I do not care for decorative stem inserts on a billiard. They seem to break up the lines too much. I do like the occasional silver or gold band. Now having said that, I think I would like to have a group 3 burgundy stained billiard with 1 knuckle of bamboo and a black vulcanite stem.
