I have more pipes than I need; but have given away or traded off about an equal number. Quite a lot of my pipes have some sentimental history attached to them and all are at least decent smokers. I see new pipes come into the shop and some tempt me, but I have to ask, Would I trade any of my own pipes for this? Always the answer is no. A qualified "no" however. I have some very good smoking seconds in pipes that I'd trade for a high grade Savinelli or a Les Wood that have caught my eye; but that's not likely to happen. It's better to keep the very good smoking seconds and gift them to one of my sons or a friend, as I have already done.

I am almost to the point that I would snap up any pencil shank pot shapes that I might see. The old pre transition Barlings I've acquired have really made me fall in love with that overall configuration. As expected, such pipes prove hard to find.

What's your White Whale pipe?

I've always wanted a perfectly proportioned bent Billiard made out of smooth Morta with a black palm extension and a dark Cumberland or white/ivory colored stem, but I rarely buy pipes anymore other than a Cob or clay here or there, so I doubt I would buy it even if I did find one.

Currently, I think it would be an Upshall Canadian with a grade of B or better in a size 5.

My white whale pipe has long been a Love Geiger sandblasted BoDog:

The expense associated with acquiring an example means that it will always remain an elusive white whale too!

Dammit if a close approximation to the BoDog didn't pop up on Scandpipes today,
I was greatly tempted.

:pipe2:

The $495 price tag is actually rather reasonable considering what this makers pipes sell for new:

I am currently trying to save for a new (used) car though, so my brain beat out my heart and common sense prevailed.

Hopefully someone will buy it soon so it'll stop gnawing at my consciousness!

I'd really like a seven day cased set of billiards, but that ain't going to happen.

Maigurs Knets' smooth "Turtle" with Amboyna accent. It's the pipe that made me want to be a pipe maker...and one that I will want until the day I die.

It is a mighty fine pipe. I'm envious.

Sure, we have the, "Pipe of Man's Desire" thread, threads about the one that got away, and even threads about pipes we could stand to lose. But now Professor UncleBob has presented a condition, a pinnacle, a point of nothing higher, that gives pause to ponder. What pipe has become your White Whale? What pipe has become an obsession for you? What pipe will you chase and chase and chase after with little regard to other life situations? Is there such a pipe on your horizon? <snip>

That'll cost you some serious scratch seeing as it was an anniversary gift from Mrs 14.

I just read my initial reply.
It made me laugh.

Seems I was wrong about everything.

The pipe I want to find and own more than any other keeps changing.
Every time I think I'm ready to stop buying pipes and simply enjoy what I have a little time will pass and the urge returns.

I give pipes away to ease the shame (or free up space on my desk - this may just be another rationalization).

The sea, it turns out, is filled with white whales. Their trick is that they only allow themselves to be seen one or two at a time so we're tricked into believing there are few.

Sneaky buggers, those white whale pipes.

But this time I'm certain. If I could just find a Paolo Becker I can afford, or another Wayne Teipen . . .

The force (PAD) is strong with this one. All he sees are whales. It has taken over your visual processing system!
