Ever See This Much Cake Come Out Of A Pipe?

Post by Goose55 » Sat Jun 17, 2017 12:06 pm

Ever see this much cake come out of a pipe? That HUGE chunk on top of the pile broke loose from the very bottom.

Image

This is my little project in this estate Bartlett & Bickley "Picadilly" English bent I picked up on Ebay for $13. It's my kind of pipe, with a 1 inch diameter bowl, and over 2 inches deep.

My plan is to strip the finish and stain off to bare wood, and then two coats of paste wax. The shank shows vertical grain, so I can hardly wait to see whats hidden on the bowl. The stem will need several steps of automotive grade sandpaper, and finally swirl mark remover, and then wax. I hope I can preserve the red dot.

Proof that was a well loved pipe by its previous owner. Nice find!

It's a labor of love, for I have high hopes this will be my alternate Gawith, Hoggarth, & Co. (unscented) Brown Flake pipe!

I just finished restoring the stem. What a work out for my hands and fingers. It was aerobic exercise!

Were you able to save the red dot?

Yes, I was easily able to save the red dot, and it's crystal clear. And a good thing, too, considering the history with Dunhill. I will post a before and after photo of the stem, soon. But you may have wear sunglasses to view it, because it's gleaming. ;-)

I have decided that since the bowl is so very tall, I will sand smooth & polish the rim, to expose the grain.

Wasn't that one huge pile of cake?

That looks like the pile of cake I get from mine periodically. Actually things have improved since I started using a knife to trim cake. If you burn the cake you can probably get a sense of what was smoked in the pipe.

Many of the dots are in fact small plastic dowels. Blatter uses knitting needles. They used to be green dots but then red dots became the rule. Lots of people speculated about the meaning behind that change. The Blatter's finally commented that they had run out of green knitting needles and all that they could get was red and silver. LOL!

I can see in the sunlight that I still will polish the stem some more. The bowl is so very tall and the chamber depth (2 inches +) that I decided to sand down and bevel the rim. And, here, I have whetted it with water to bring out the grain, some of which appears to be a cross grain. There is quite a deep blemish noticeable, and I have to do some thinking as to what I might do about that. Perhaps I will bevel the outer edge more, to make it match the stem end of the shank. All the finish on the bowl has been removed and tomorrow I will get some wood bleach at Ace, and some paste wax (if I don't have any here) and see if I can't complete this project.

It's a mixed grain pipe. That is much of the pipe stock out there. Doesn't actually mean anything for smoking. In this case the amount of cake is a clear rebuttal of Ehwa.

Traditionally the English pipe makers would stop shaping when they got a reasonably clear pipe without divots. Any more and there was a good chance of uncovering more blemishes. This is the nature of briar. The risk in beveling the outer edge is that the blemish opens up into a crevice that echoes when you yell into it. OTOH it could be just a surface blemish that will clear. This is the game of cutting pipes.

Insert that stem fully. If you put a little graphite on the tenon it will seat fully more easily.

I wish the pile of pipe cake was good tasting, but it is not.

Me, neither. Me thinks anyone who lets a pipe get that bad is either crazy, or lazy,... or both.

Only unsuspectingly, with an estate Ben Wade Prominence I got from "Shiny Pipes." She said it was "ready to smoke," so I believed her. She reamed the chamber but forgot to ream and clean the shank. 8O Horrible taste.

But some here may like that taste. :signofcross: I shake my head in disbelief, wondering how. For me, I like the taste of tobacco.
