Beewax Meerschaum

Post by Goose55 » Thu Jun 29, 2017 1:01 pm

I don't even own a Meerschaum pipe, and have never smoked one. I am just curious. What is the advantage of applying beeswax to Meerschaum pipes?

As anyone experience with acquiring an estate Meerschaum pipe? Do they ghost more than a briar pipe?

Really? It hardens, protects, and as a really nice touch, darkens with smoking.

I think the story is that they ghost less. I bought an estate meer - a lions head in my effort to try and be more like Skip. Love that pipe.

Goose

I got on the meerschaum kick a few years ago, had to have one! I did the searches here...looked on e-bay and the online shops and the local shops. The CPS pipe of the year, one year was a meerschaum. But I still don't have one. I bought one at auction but it arrived broken, I bought one at a flea market but sold it on the auction site before I smoked it (it was like new).

They are supposed to ghost less or not at all. The beeswax helps seal the stone and color the pipe and its a cool "care for your pipe" process that should be right up your alley. I think you should get one and try it...let us know if you like it.

Here's one that was gifted to me... I think it's a cheaper pressed meer. But who cares... light weight, great smoker.

Cool pipe...I haven't found a carving that I like yet....but if I find one like that lion...I may have to buy a pipe. Is the stem good quality?

They typically don't ghost at all. I've smoked about 4 ounces of Captain Black white and 1 oz of Aperitif. Image

They're not for you, Goose. Shank brushes and Dawn will destroy them, I'm afraid.

Beeswax is applied periodically to colour (fix the smoke stain) the pipe. The colour is a surface stain. If you don't care about colour then it almost doesn't matter. There is one reason. Turkish meerschaum is fragile and it takes damage over time and there will be cracks that threaten the pipe. The beeswax also seems to prevent crack growth (stabilize) in the meerschaum. So it adds life to your meerschaum. This amazed me when I discovered this.

Meerschaum pipes retain flavour just as much as briar if you have cake in them. I haven't experienced the no-cake option with either. But I would guess that a no-cake briar and a no-cake meerschaum are about the same. There is no reason for difference as far as I can see.

I think experiencing the differences that various pipe materials contribute to smoking is a fine exploration of our hobby. Meerschaums are worthwhile. I have about 15 of them, which I think was similar to somebody else around here.

African meerschaum (only available estate) is a very resilient much less fragile alternative that is worthwhile on its own. Unlike briar meerschaums all taste virtually the same. So it isn't that African is inferior for smoking. Quite the contrary. Though the African meerschaum is coloured and hardened in manufacturing so it will not really colour any more.

Maybe Motta would be a good alternative? We'd have to back off, too. 5-10,000 years old, it'll survive the Goosening. The Arizona sun is a joke to morta.

African meer would very likely tolerate Goose's cleaning methods. AFAIK it isn't affected by a lot of moisture. You can run alcohol through it and it doesn't seem to soften as Turkish meer will. I've often wondered whether one could just remove the stem and run them through the dishwasher. They're at least as tough as briar. They're portable meerschaums - anywhere you can take a briar you can take an African meer.

How can one know if they are getting a genuine Meerschaum, or pressed?

I think instead of "genuine" you mean "block". Pressed meerschaum is still genuine meerschaum. It's just all scraps stuck together to make a block.

Yes. Block. How does one know they are looking at block or pressed Meerschaum. Especially on Ebay. Where one can't "tongue" it.
