Help me identify a pipe for 12 year old boy

Post by Irish-Dane » Sat Sep 02, 2017 7:35 pm

Last Sunday, after our church service had ended, a young man twelve years of age came up to me with a small paper bag in his hand. Nervously he asked if I could look at a pipe he had just bought. His name is Noah and if I didn't know his father as well as I do, I would have had a hard time believing a twelve year old had purchased a pipe. He pulled what looked like a meerschaum apple out of the bag and handed it to me. His request was, "I heard you know about pipes. Can you tell me how old this pipe is and how much it's worth?"

I turned the pipe into the light and the first words I saw on the shank were, "Imported Briar". The only other word on the pipe is on the opposite side and reads, "McANDREWS". I told him I didn't have any way to look it up there and that I would need to look it up at home. He nodded his approval.

I started looking the pipe over and it was pretty beat up. The paint was rubbed off in uniform spots along the bottom of the shank. The stem is heavily oxidized. The top of the bowl towards the stem is rubbed down like someone rubbed it along a concrete sidewalk. But the worst part was the bowl itself; the cake was so thick a pen wouldn't fit down into the bowl. I told him I would be happy to clean it up for him but I would need to take it home. He nodded again. I asked him if he knew that I meant I would have it at home for awhile, and he nodded again. I asked him if he wanted me to take it home right then. "Sure. Yes. That sounds good."

I'm about done with the refurb, only buffing the stem is left. Only now I remembered his first question about age and value. I've tried the usual Pipedia and Google searches with no luck. Help?

I'm seeing prices in the sub-30 range for this stuff. It's briar with fills, painted white for a reason.

From what I can find Pepik seems to be correct. The only links I could find on the brand were from Worthpoint website.

I found an advertisement for McAndrews pipes from 1954: https://newspaperarchive.com/charleston ... 1954-p-11/ It is referred to as "The new McAndrews pipe".

I also found an advertisement for McAndrews & Forbes Company that made licorice flavors for various products including tobacco:

The more I look at this, I don't think the licorice company is the same as the pipe company. I'm basing that mostly on the spelling and no mention in the advertisement about the pipe making. I would like to print out a copy of that Gazette ad though. Are you a member Bob?

But still requires a credit card... go figure.

Bastages! Have you tried LexisNexis? It may be available that way.
