Noticing French Pipes

I like old make British pipes. I will have to say though, that I've taken notice of some French made pipes recently. They fit my ideal of form and function. They tend to be small, elegantly and conservatively cut, light weight, and reasonably prices. I' usually think of Ropp with their vintage line, some even with horn stems.

Take a look at what you can get for $70:



Then, today I stumble across P. Piazzolla Pipes. They range in price from $30 to $40 dollars. That's right, cheaper than a Grabow. A few look like they have p-lip style bits.

Admittedly, I think I've been biased against anything French for a long time. I think it's time to get over that.

I think the only two French pipes I have are my Butz-Choquins. They both smoke very well.

I noticed the Piazzollas on SP a week or two ago and wondered about them also. They certainly look nice from this end of the internet.

Don't take any notice. Forget the fact that St. Claude was the epicenter of briar pipes. Ignore the fact they invented them. Ignore the Mâitres Pipiers. Ignore the long and storied history of the brands. Ignore how many English brands were started by French emigrés. Ignore that the cut is often more traditional than English makers.

Look away. There's nothing to see here. Damme, I said look away. Move along.

I've enjoyed French pipes over the years, from assorted briars to one rustic cherrywood.
Lighting one up is about as close as I'll ever get to having a smoke with Inspector Maigret, or better, Jacques Tati's character Monsieur Hulot

I remember a while back when Gabriel and I were saying nice things about Ropp horn stems and hearing lots of jokes about putting hardened cow hair in our mouths.

A couple of horn-stem Ropps, a trio of Chacoms and a pair of the recently made French Comoy's live here. Ironically, British pipe purists lament the move of Comoy's to St.Claude, but for those with a longer view it's just a return to their ancestral homeland.

All of my French pipes were relatively inexpensive.
All look great.
All smoke well.

Maybe best of all, if you enjoy having pipes sizes ranging from small to large, many of the French makers offer pocket-sized pipes with small bowls perfect for carrying without bulk and grabbing a quick smoke. I love them for short pipe breaks at work.

As for keeping them a secret - too late.

Found a nice little pipe shop in Paris today but they only had Chacom and Butz in the realm of French Pipes. The owner was a nice Gent who had been running the shop since 1968 tho had very little knowledge of pipes and/or their history.
The shop was a tad disappointing overall.
