CPS JoeGoat's Very Latest Pipe Masterpiece

Post by Goose55 » Mon Nov 06, 2017 3:31 pm

An estate Pipa Croci bent scoop quickly became my favorite pipe this past summer, and look what our very own JoeGoat made for me. An exact duplicate, but even bigger and better. I love this pipe he made, in every way, and the color! Magnificent! Draught hole has good draw & is dead center at the bottom of the bowl. The quality of grain is spectacular. The shaping & finish is absolutely flawless. If any of you have been thinking you want to commission a pipe, JoeGoat is your guy!

And look how thoughtful. He gifted me with a pipe sock for my Croci, as well

Nice. Nice. Nice.

The fit and finish of that new pipe is superb. Well done JAG!

Very very nice. Congrats!

Niiiiiiice!

Here is something. As JGoat was finishing this pipe, he took great pain in seeking to match a color I liked in this Croci Starlight I saw on Smoking Pipes. He actually did just right, because as his pipe ages, and darkens, it will look almost identical....

I hope age will match the Starlight. The color that Croci put on their pipe is beautiful! I plan to keep chasing that color. Color matching is a skill set I still have much to learn in. You gave me some great practice though!

I will admit that I would have never carved a pipe with this styling without someone asking me to do so. It's just not the type of shape that catches my eye. The beauty in the lines of this pipe only started to appear to me as I shaped it. As it took shape and sat in my hand so naturally, I learned why you liked this shape so much. Pipes of this form will forever catch my eye. After I slid it into the pipe sock to ship it, I had to pull it back out to admire it one last time. You have a great eye for pipes Goose! It has been a pleasure!

That's a NICE pipe. Very nice.

I'm glad you were able to execute it so well. Good for Goose too.

For those who enjoy getting some early pipes from talented guys who will soon be out of our price ranges -- I can also recommend a JAG commission for your collection.

I have an early Joegoat made of olive wood -- a sweet lovat with a saddle bit. I smoke it often -- am smoking right now! The olive wood has darkened a bit, and taken on more character. It has mellowed; the contrast of grain is less striking than new olive. Otherwise, it has held up as well as any briar.

I think more pipe makers should consider olive as pipe-worthy material. Less expensive than briar, & without the risks of sand pits and briar's other flaws.

I'd like to know the answer to this as well! The gap puzzled me from day one. I would have offered to fix it if I had the tools and experience for pipe repairs.

Goose pulls the stems out like that on purpose. I don't recall exactly why, but it seems like he either read something on the internet or had an anecdotal experience that convinced him this is required in order to preserve a pipe. A few have tried to explain that fiddling with the stem that much is actually detrimental to the health of a pipe, but Goose is set on it.
