Goose pulls the stems out like that on purpose. I don't recall exactly why, but it seems like he either read something on the internet or had an anecdotal experience that convinced him this is required in order to preserve a pipe. A few have tried to explain that fiddling with the stem that much is actually detrimental to the health of a pipe, but Goose is set on it.

We all have quirks.
Yes, we do. And my reason for that is that I don't force things. If its tight fitting, rather than stressing the shank, or have it adjusted so that it does seat, but is then too loose, I live with it. Capeesh?

But that's enough about that for now. Let us return to JGoat's pipe.

No, I can only capisco. Sicilian dialect is painful to the ears.

Did I miss an inquisition? Sorry.

Goose, you haven't explained why the stems would need to be forced. This isn't the case with the rest of us.

Thank you all! I'm so very glad you like it Goose!
The pipe is just drop dead gawjus, JGoat. What else can be said, besides when can you make me another one?
I will admit that I would have never carved a pipe with this styling without someone asking me to do so. It's just not the type of shape that catches my eye. The beauty in the lines of this pipe only started to appear to me as I shaped it. As it took shape and sat in my hand so naturally, I learned why you liked this shape so much. Pipes of this form will forever catch my eye. After I slid it into the pipe sock to ship it, I had to pull it back out to admire it one last time. You have a great eye for pipes Goose! It has been a pleasure!
Wow. So eloquently said. They say the Crocis are all once made throw away the mold pipes, but in this case it would be a waste to do so. It would be fine with me if every pipe was identical to this shape, known I have heard, as a "scoop."

I have just lit up my very 1st bowl of Prince Albert in your pipe, JGoat. I can immediately feel the largeness of the pipe. It fills my hand so naturally & completely. EXCELLENT draw. A pipe by which all others should be judged by.

Stem. Not flush. Just sayin'.

Rite nice pipe(s), BTW.
There's a reason for that. Go ahead, ask him.
I'd like to know the answer to this as well! The gap puzzled me from day one. I would have offered to fix it if I had the tools and experience for pipe repairs.
I know what caused that gap. Once upon a time, that pipe was owned by a "wet smoker."

We do not know whether he enjoyed smoking goopy aromatics, or just tended to drool a lot... but he had a habit of pulling the pipe apart often while he was smoking it, perhaps to daub it out. He left it apart to dry better. And eventually the swollen wood fibers expanded and set until the stem would not fit in the shank anymore.

Why must we steal the stage from JoeGoat, who made such a magnificent pipe?

Mr. Joseph Goat himself asked why there is a gap in the model pipe.

Just be glad that he didn't design your commissioned pipe with a similar gap -- thinking perhaps that you just like it that way!

Yes, it's a beautiful pipe. We note that it does not now have a gap in the stem to shank fit, like the other shown.
Will that remain the case?

No worries! I always enjoy seeing where a thread will end up. They start out in one direction and inevitably take a turn. haha

This.

Once you hit "submit", a thought or thread is no longer yours alone. Others may pick it up or they may kick down the road or even in to the ditch. It can be maddening if you want a serious discussion - say your teenage son is looking for some study resources - but that's just how it goes 'round here. Rabbit holes and side conversations are the stuff of CPS and complaining about it is sure to backfire. Think of us a large family, that drinks wine, returning to the Thanksgiving table for dessert. All the serious talk is behind us, *Uncle Bob is trashed and the rest of us have a good buzz going so there's no telling what may come up.

* I don't mean our own 'Uncle Bob', who may or may not get trashed on Thanksgiving wine. I mean the generic 'Uncle Bob' who gets trashed on Thanksgiving wine. There's always an Uncle Bob, even if it's Aunt Millie. or Cousin George.

I have a genuine Uncle Bob. He would be the one to get plastered on Thanksgiving wine. The whole family loves Uncle Bob though.

How many monkeys do you have working the pipe production line, Joe?

I tried doing that, but they're not well suited to pipe making. They are bred and trained to follow my orders without hesitation, but they are much better suited to military endeavors than things of an artistic nature. You can't get blood from a stone.
