Is It Really Better To Burn Out?

The part of the church where the silliest things happen. Conversations that sound like they belong in the youth room will be moved here.

Is it better to burn out or fade away?

Burnout and people will remember, quote, and reference you, though little of it will be flattering. Fade away and you just become the "I think I remember that dude" guy.

I hope to just fade away, though sometimes, going down in a blinding ball of fire has its appeal.

I used to know a pastor who said "It's better to burn out than rust out." I kind of agree with him. Another pastor used to say we ought to plan like we're going to live forever and work like we're going to die tonight. Sort of the same idea. We've got to use common sense, of course, but I feel good about staying busy doing what God has given me to do. And so far, it never seems to end.
Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:6,7 ESV

Hey Hey, My My. It's better to burn out than to fade away. According to Kurt Cobain at least. Then again, you have to question the wisdom of a kid who stuck a shotgun in his mouth.

You win some, you lose some, and some get rained out.

Wait, is this a favorite catch phrase thread?

Neil Young wrote:The rock'n'roll spirit is not survival. Of course the people who play rock'n'roll should survive. But the essence of the rock'n'roll spirit to me, is that it's better to burn out really bright than to sort of decay off into infinity. Even though if you look at it in a mature way, you'll think, "well, yes ... you should decay off into infinity, and keep going along". Rock'n'roll doesn't look that far ahead. Rock'n'roll is right now. What's happening right this second. Is it bright? Or is it dim because it's waiting for tomorrow - that's what people want to know. And that's why I say that.
