Why I Don't Hate Country Music

The part of the church where the silliest things happen. Conversations that sound like they belong in the youth room will be moved here.

Corb used to play in one of the greatest Canadian indie bands ever, The Smalls. They were hard to define. Punk. Metal. Thrash. Jazz.
When they broke up around 2000/2001, Corb went back to his roots.
Now at a Corb Lund show you'll find Mohawks and cowboy hats standing side by side and singing along. It's a beautiful thing.
The intersection of punk and country is an interesting one. One need look no further than Mike Ness or Johnnie Cash.

When I became old enough to know about country music (1960s) I decided that I detested it. Never listened to it at all. Then I got into country music in the early 90s. I guess I liked the sound of that era better. I enjoyed Alan Jackson (saw in concert), Aaron Tippin, John Anderson, Patty Loveless, Randy Travis, Suzy Boggus, Martina McBride, Pam Tillis, Ricky Skaggs, Trisha Yearwood (saw in concert), Lorrie Morgan and others that I can't remember. The only ones I remember not liking at all were Tim McGraw, Travis Tritt, Garth Brooks and Vince Gill. Then after 2 or 3 years I got tired of it and quit listening. Never turned back. Still don't hate it but don't know why.
Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:6,7 ESV

I like Gary Stewart too much. If I listened to him as much as I want to I am afraid that I would run around on Mrs R.

“I believe that many who find that "nothing happens" when they sit down, or kneel down, to a book of devotion, would find that the heart sings unbidden while they are working their way through a tough bit of theology with a pipe in their teeth and a pencil in their hand.”

This song was running through my mind during my father's final night in this life. I know there are others who can relate.

If country music was good enough for Ray Charles, it's good enough for me.

I neither love nor hate country music. I rarely choose it, but occasionally a song will stand out to me. The personalities in country music also stand out to me more than other styles of music.

Today would have been the 80th birthday of Merle Ronald Haggard. Today is the first anniversary of his death. God rest his soul.

This day was honestly difficult last year and is difficult this year, as well. But tonight, we're gonna kick the footlights out again.
