This post (and the OP about LovelyRitaMeterMaid) gets to the heart of the problem. Country music that's played on the radio today is programed for K-Love listening suburban women and 14 year old girls. For sure, there's always been a genre for that audience (think Pat Boone and Shaun Cassidy), but it wasn't country and western. That was our music. Middle-aged, white, working class males. There's still music out there for us - Corb Lund, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Chris Stapleton, and Sturgill Simpson - it just aint on FM radio.
