From my point of view, try to get both within your budget.

....But i suppose it depends on what you want to do with it.
The bandsaw is far better than the sander for cutting off fingers.
Yeah, but when you touch a fingernail to a 60 grit disk it doesn't last long...
And I use 36 grit at the start :) It's like paper with boulders super glued to it.

I'm thinking a band saw really does make the most sense. I'd like to do a lot of other woodworking too one day, like board games, puzzles, and junk like that.
Fingernail schmingernail. . .wait 'till you run a knuckle across that thing. And with grinders/sanders there's nothing left to fold back in place or stitch up - it's just gone. Yowch!

Bandsaw. Hands down.

Although I do dream of having a large, low-rpm, slack-belt sander some day. I have an old 14" bandsaw a buddy traded me in exchange for fixing a leaking timing chain cover on his MG a few years ago. I got tired of tuning and adjusting the POS every time I wanted to use it so I bought a small Ryobi 9" bandsaw at auction a few months ago for $60 and retired the big one. The big one may get converted to a belt sander if I ever decide it's worth the trouble.

Go with getting the band saw first, but don't super cheap on what you buy or you will say things you ought to not say... Then later buy the belt sander that can take a couple different width belts...

I do have and I do use a 4x36 belt sander that also has a 6" disc. I drill in a drill press and the process I use requires the sides of the block to be parallel in order to insure the draft hole meets the tobacco chamber in the center. I use the belt/disc sander to prep the blocks prior to drilling.

Spend some time setting it up perfectly. Youtube is your friend.

Be mindful of your fingers. The blade always wins.

Have fun, it's a great addition to a shop.
