A JAG Briar Freehand with Ox Horn Mount

Post by joegoat » Thu Apr 06, 2017 8:59 am

Back to Briar. This block had freehand written on it from the moment I pulled it out of the box. The length and angles were wrong though and no matter how I drew the form, a freehand wouldn't fit. It sat for a while before I decided to make use of the ox horn that I had. The mount is reminiscent of the horn that graced the lovely Nonpareils made by Savinelli. I'm very happy with the end product! The briar turned out to be exquisite and the horn was a nice medium to work with.

Your pipe carving style reminds me of a long-gone CPSer named Anixi. He was known for how well his pipes smoked, like he had a magic touch with the briar and his drilling. He was the first person I ever commissioned for a pipe. Anyway, this style scrams Anixi to me. Cool stuff.

Thank you for your kind words. I hope to live up to his legacy.

Is this a military mount?

Not Military. It's what has become my standard 5/16 inch delrin tenon. I also put a delrin sleeve in the horn to slick up the joint and keep the tobacco juices from staining the horn. I don't know if that was a legitimate fear or not, but I took the precaution anyway.

A bit. The idea popped into my head and I dropped all other plans (watching tv and scratching mostly) for that day to get started on it.
