“No doubt Pain as God's megaphone is a terrible instrument; [yet] it may lead to final and un-repented rebellion. But it gives the only opportunity the bad man can have for amendment. It removes the veil; it plants the flag of truth within the fortress of a rebel soul.” ― C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain
You aren't just in this for the smiting, are you?
No. Because I don't' like pain anymore than anyone else. But Lewis offers some very good reasonable arguments for the existence of pain in the world.

"Whether we like it or not, God intends to give us what we need, not what we now think we want. George MacDonald, in a passage I cannot now find, represents God as saying to men 'you must be strong with my strength and blessed with my blessedness, for I have no other to give you.' That is the conclusion of the whole matter. God gives what He has, not what He has not: He gives the happiness that there is, not the happiness that is not. To be God — to be like God and to share His goodness in creaturely response — or to be miserable — these are the only three alternatives."

Sounds like something C.S. would have said.

“I notice that Our Lord, while stressing the terror of hell with unsparing severity, usually emphasizes the idea, not of duration, but of finality.
Consignment to the destroying fire is usually treated as the end of the story—not as the beginning of a new story. That the lost soul is eternally
fixed in its diabolical attitude we cannot doubt: but whether this eternal fixity implies endless duration—or duration at all—we cannot say.”

I came upon this nugget over the weekend.

SHUT IT.

Can you imagine? No. Wait. That's not right. Hold on. Just hold on. Oh. OK. Here it is. That was some guy shouting at CS Lewis and NOT Lewis at all.

Sorry. False alarm.

Carry on.
