Do Humans Really Have Immortal Souls?

Post by Goose55 » Wed Mar 23, 2016 9:38 pm

Do Humans Really Have Immortal Souls?

I ask because apparently much of evangelical Christianity says in one way or another, that ALL humans have "immaterial spirits" that live forever. And the dogma of everlasting torment has to have immaterial spirits to burn forever.

To my view, this seems to very much conflict with Scripture which states that "only God hath immortality."

The evangelical view of immaterial spirits or immortality of the soul seems, too, to be an echo from the Garden: "Ye shall not surely die."

What think ye?

Rational creatures (spirits, angels, demons) have immortal spirits. This was known to Greek philosophy, but the concept of immortal spirits is found in every human culture.

Humans are the only known "rational animals," which also have material bodies. We see that bodied die and decay. But every culture has the concept of an immortal afterlife for human spirits. This seems to be a universal awareness of humanity -- for all practical purposes, the immortality of human souls is "self-evident." [However, like any self-evident fact, it can be denied by obstinate persons. All of reality is just an illusion, if you insist. But most of us trust our senses, and accept reality as a given.]

The Christian revelation is a strange one. We are told that death is an accident, caused by ancestral sin and our separation from God. However, death is not God's will for us. God will restore our bodies and our spirits together at the Resurrection of the Dead. Spiritual separation from our bodies is a temporary state.

Does Scripture really say that "only God hath immortality"? I'd have to see that context. It could easily mean that God is not subject to the bodily death that humans must endure. And early passages of the Old Testament do not know as much as later books. By the time of the Maccabees (contemporary with Alexander the Great), faithful Jews had a firm grasp on the Resurrection of the Dead, praying for the dead, purification of the soul, and so on.

We are an immortal soul temporarily living in the physical universe that requires us to live in a physical body for a short period of time.

That sounds like a New Age inversion of Christian faith: Death is a temporary state of spiritual separation from our immortal bodies.

I'm on my phone and about to go to the dentist, but Paul's statement can be reconciled with other passages which speak of our immortality (not to mention that of the angels). God alone possesses immortality by His nature... but he shares this attribute (and others, like power and free will) with certain of his creatures.

If not, then I'm unsure of how the parable of Lazarus and Dives is of much consequence.

Yes. This is why we await the resurrection of the dead. We do not remain disembodied souls after death. Our selfsame bodies will be raised incorruptible and joined with our souls forever...like it was meant to be. Christ makes right the wrong of the garden. Forever has meat on it.

Hey, isn't there a holyday coming up soon that sort of, kind of, addresses this?
