Gideon Bibles and College Evangelism

I wonder what we've come to sometimes. I'm not a Protestant so I don't take Gideon bibles, although I treasured a Gideon pocket New Testament for years and I've certainly read them when alone in hotel rooms.

I guess what I'm trying to say is the thought of calling the police to save me from a few gents handing out bibles, even abridged versions, wouldn't have occurred to me in my college days. We were too busy having fun or throwing rocks at nambla marches, which, come to think of it, was also fun.
I moved this over here because the other thread is a Prayer Request.

I imagine that some old farts handing out bibles on a college campus is benign and it may seem silly for people here to think of people calling the police about it but this is outside of the college "witnessing" context. At TTU, I walked across campus 4-5 times a week and my route included the "free speech" area. Once a year, The Gideons came out and handed out bibles. I have several, now. However, there were other Christian groups who came out to witness their version as well. This included five different groups who came (still do, I imagine) twice a year to yell obscenities* at the students.

These groups are lumped in with the Gideon's in many people's view. If you are not a Christian, why take the time to differentiate? Heck, I have heard RCC members in the past equate groups like this as basically the same protestants. So, A little grace and understanding if someone called the police may go a whole lot further when and if it happens.

Bob, your post is very well said, and in fact our group had the exact same discussion yesterday.

BTW, I've never been on a Gideon distribution internationally, but all of those that have, that I've spoken with, say that among countries that don't ban the Bible, the US is the absolute toughest place.
I'm old but I'm happy. (Most of the time.)

I guess this is common. I know it happens on the campus of Indiana University. My niece recently got called out for having short hair. She's a bit of a fragile person, meaning a lot of things she disagrees with either offends her or hurts her feelings. It may have ruined her day, but she knows me and my family as Christians so that helps. There's always someone in every group that ruins it.

My opinion is that there is no need to call the police unless things get physically violent. If that happened I would have a hard time not hitting back. As wos says, "unlclench".

Evangelism is a funny thing. Everyone thinks of something when hearing the term - some negative, some positive. I've never understood the appeal of yelling at folks in an attempt to spark change. I think a softer touch is required - a genuine conversation over a cup of coffee or tea. Personally, I like to know their story before I begin speaking about mine.

Let's just say I got a bit carried away but thanks to technology I have edited out the emotional outbursts of this morning.

Wosbald would never say that and you know it. For shame.
