What does crimp cut mean?

Post by A_Morley » Thu Jun 16, 2016 9:01 am

You know good and well why I'm asking.

Prince Albert has always been labeled as crimp cut. At least it has as long as I've been smoking it. Prince Albert, however, is the only tobacco I know of that claims to be crimp cut.

What do you think distinguishes crimp cut tobacco from other cuts of tobacco?

I've always suspected it to be a meaningless term used only as a marketing tool.
Similar to "luxury pouch" nonsense.

I have no data, no research has been done, and I'm shooting from the hip in the best traditions of this Forum.

Prince Albert used to have a really narrow, fine cut. I think. That's from memory. But it was suitable for cigarettes or pipe, and that's all I think it means.

Crimp cut is cut in irregular, smaller pieces and is designed to pack with air pockets so it burns both smoothly and coolly. It is similar to a Granulated cut, which is just cut slightly larger.

You know, BLWB is (or at least was) marketed as a crimp cut. I don't think it is marketed as such anymore.

I seem to remember that another aspect of crimp cut is that it also included the cut-up stems of the 'baccy leaf and was considered a slightly less quality cut.

You might need to get another source. There is a definite anti-Dutch sentiment 'round these parts.

Ah, an authoritative Dutch pipe smokers blog. Is this the only description of crimp cut on the interwebs I wonder?

LOL!

I don't think there is much in contemporary tobacco sources. We need an older source when crimp cut was a viable or popular option. I mean, when was the last time you read a tobacco description with "granulated cut"? These cuts go in and out of style.

Oh no, I found many references to people trying to describe it as a ribbon cut. This style is not popular right now. I will look at home for the industry definition. That blog was close to what I remembered.

This guy defines it as this: Crimp Tobacco – Crimped tobacco is used primarily in pipe smoking and is made by lightly pressing short cut varieties of tobacco

So far we have 3 different descriptions of crimp cut.

Is there an industry standard definition as well?
