Weirdo Tobacco Recommendation.

Post by hugodrax » Mon Jul 17, 2017 3:30 pm

So I'm in Allegheny Smokeworks today looking for a new baccy and I'm fingerings a tin of Cabbie's Mixture, pondering its purchase when a fellow customer came up and recommended it as a good tobacco. He said he had five tins put away.

Intrigued, I asked him what it tasted like. The reply? "Oh, I've never had any, it just gets really good reviews." When I asked him whether he thought tight, vertical straight grain rising out of Birdseye on the bottom of the bowl led to faster drying times and an overall better pipe, he said he didn't think so.

So I bought the tobacco. Guy couldn't be all wrong.

Cabbie's Mixture is a favorite of mine. It does need a bit of drying out though before firing up. And I don't have any put away as I keep smoking it as I get a tin in.

If I'm not mistaken this is a VA Per, yes? Gotta be the only reason I haven't nabbed up a tin by now.

No, thankfully. Ordinary looking fellow. Glad I took a flyer, too.

I was at my local B&M and a guy saw me looking at the wall of tins, and suggested that I buy the "On Special" cigars and cut them up and smoke them in my pipe...

I smiled and thanked him for the suggestion. I didn't want to take the time to discuss with him the many reasons that I thought that was a crazy idea.

I used to know a guy who only smoked cigars in his pipes.

I've seen guys stick the remaining 2-3 inches of their already lit cigar into their pipe and finish it up that way. Looks kind of weird at first with the cigar sticking up above the bowl.

This thread reminds me that I have a jar containing half a tin of Cabbies Mixture bouncing around the house here somewhere. It's not with all of my other tobaccos.

I wish I could find it; I rather liked this one.

I do this. I have jars of cigar leaf, some from cut up cigars that didn't draw very well. I keep a variety of cigar leaf because it is a nice addition to many tobaccos. Try adding cigar leaf to your English Latakia mixtures. Nice.

I don't smoke a cigar by inserting it in the pipe. But adding cigar leaf? Oh yes.

Yea I feel like smoking the butt of a cigar in a pipe would be altogether undesirable since you're basically just smoking the accumulated tar and nastiness at that point... maybe I'm just not that dedicated...

Now, suppose I was looking for a recommendation for a weird tobacco. What would you recommend?

Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky is striped flakes. That's pretty weird. Tasty also.

Edward G. Robinson is on my high strangeness list. As is Milano by Mastro de Paja. Weird, weird tobaccos.
