Straight VAs

Post by CupOjoe » Fri Jan 26, 2018 12:52 pm

In the market to try a new straight va. I love BBF but want to try something different. I’ve had Mac Baren’s ready rubbed VA but it burned a bit hot for me.

I love the grassy/hay element of BBF, so anything that accentuates that type of character is a plus. I don’t smoke a ton but probably lean English more times than not, but in the spring, I’m just wanting a good straight VA.

Suggestions?

McClelland Aurora is celestial all Virginia blend. As our dearly departed Rusty said about it: "It's doesn't have Perique, and it doesn't need it."

Get some. If you can find any now.

At the moment, BBF is at the top of my list, but OGS is right in there and currently available tinned for about the same price as bulk tobaccos

Dunhill Flake is terrific and SG Full Virginia Flake is, too, both being more “full range” to my palate than BBF which emphasizes the middle and low notes. Unfortunately, Samuel Gawith tobaccos seem a little difficult to find in stock just now.

If one of the attractions to you of BBF is its gentle nature, I bet you’d also like Peter Stokkebye Luxury Twist Flake, another gentle, lovely smoke.

Also consider Sutliff 507C Virginia Slices and McClelland 2010. I believe they have the characteristics you seek. Both bulk blends but quite good. Jar some 2010. Ages very well.

Some of these may not be technically 100% Virginia, so I feel safe in adding Hal o' the Wynd to this list, as it's one of my favorites in this category.

That said, hugo's OGS is a fine recommendation. I completely support it.

That does it.
I’m leaving my Mac Baren HH Pure Virginia in the cellar for another 10 years.

Va no. 1 has a bad reputation. Others don't. Pure Virginia is a delight. HH Syrian is worth its weight in gold.

I'm smoking VA #1 right now and am loving it. I'm getting lots of different flavors.

In the last year, I've stopped taking tobacco reviews into consideration and have been happier with what I've smoked.

One I have just tried in this category is F&T Cut Virginia Plug. I am really liking it.

Gary wrote elsewhere about this blend, that some aging made it sublime.

Also from Pease's Fog City Selections is a straight Virginia, Embarcadero that is worthy of trying. It's Red Virginia with Izmir leaf. Has a nice sweet/ sour tang quite similar to McClelland Reds
