Ogden’s Gold Block

Post by arank87 » Mon Nov 11, 2019 9:22 pm

Specifically to the Condor/St Bruno/Lakeland fans but to anyone really, is the modern Gold Block any good?

I haven't had it myself.

It gets very mixed reviews, mostly on the bad side.

One reviewer is a friend who loves the oldschool UK style stuff.

I trust his taste and opinion: hawky454

He wrote:
I actually was pleasantly surprised with this one when I finally got around to smoking it. I haven't had the original so I can't compare it to that but it is my understanding that this was an OTC baccy at one time and for that it is a perdy darn good tobacco. The prices we are seeing on this tobacco in the States would suggest it's a top shelf, high end tobacco so it seems Mac Baren is trying to force this blend in a market where it does not belong. I would happily pay OTC prices for Gold Block but unfortunately this blend does not warrant the current asking price. This is not a high end, fancy tobacco and if that is what you are expecting you will be disappointed. It is a good, bland smoke that I wouldn't mind putting into my pipe from time to time. It doesn't have any real flavor that I can speak of, it's like a sugar cookie in that it's sweet but doesn't really taste like anything but is still quite enjoyable. If pushed this will definitely give you tongue bite so go slow with this one. Air dry this one 15-20 minutes before loading up and you'll be good to go. Nicotine is nothing special so if your require large doses of nicotine than I suggest ya snuff and puff with this one. A fun thing you can try out with this blend is mixing it 50/50 with St. Bruno for a whole different taste experience. Apparently this method was very popular for a time, they call it Ogden's Mixture.

They should have kept this one where it belongs... over the counter.
I have had an older tin from likely the 80's or 90's...

...Gold Block was in production for a very very long time, it was not a blend developed by Ogden's, but inherited by them from another manufacturer. It was "sweetened in bond" meaning that it was sort of given a cavendish treatment.

Image

I would say that it was a baccy aimed at the middle class as it was always a bit more pricey and the taste very sweet in almost a candied sense.

Refined and sophisticated,
mild/med nic-o-teen.

They tried to market it as upper crust and it looks like Mac Baren is trying to do the same.

This old advert is a good funny one, but simultaneously tried to invoke rarefied airs.

This sucked in the beginning, sucks now, and will suck forever. It is a faithful suck in that it sucks today very similarly to how it sucked in the past.

If you want to see how it sucked years ago, I recommend you try it today.

An excellent and accurate synopsis!

Beyond an audible chuckle, I guffawed.

Thanks for the morning laugh,
a good way to start the day. :D

I loved this...I was smoking one time with Mr. Turner and he offered some vintage Three Nuns...The pipe I had in hand was one I used with heavy Lat blends, so I reached in my bag and pulled out a fresh pipe...but it was also a bigger pipe...un-intended...but since it was a pipe that Mr. Turner had made...

well lets just say it was a good long smoke 8)

I’m going to try to snag a couple of bowls at the tobacconists tomorrow. No man on a budget should take a flier on this tobacco. And to make it more even, I will have another bowl myself.
