This one has kept my interest.

Re: What book are you reading?
I read in The Endurance that after the three took that little boat 750 miles to S Georgia Island, they only found one small beach to land and then had to go on foot for 10 days over glaciers, and peaks to the distant whaling station there. Afterward, both of his companions came to him and told him that as they forged through this last bit, they had a constant feeling that there were 4 of them, not three. Shackelton had felt the same thing but never mentioned it.
Most of the party were left on Elephant Island while they 3 sailed for 16 days and nights, 750 miles in that little boat, to seek help...

I've started into The Complete Father Brown Mysteries. Having watched the TV show, it's a little bit different than I expected, but I'm enjoying it so far.
I also just picked up a copy of Dennis Prager's The Rational Bible - Exodus: God, Slavery, and Freedom. I hope to get into that one soon.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

McGuane is a great writer and tremendous wordsmith. But on p. 206 of the Longest Silence book either he or the guy he quoted, one Doug Larsen, made a glaring error. In Texas it's snow geese that are referred to as "sky carp", not specklbellies. Indeed specklbellies are a prized goose and great tablefare.sweetandsour wrote: ↑Sun Jul 08, 2018 8:30 amIndeed, from the git go. I like his style, and share many of his sentiments. I very well could have written the final paragraph of the "Sakonnet" piece, and probably have, somewhere. Lots of atypically used words, and I have to keep Google handy, but I don't mind, actually.durangopipe wrote: ↑Tue Jun 19, 2018 10:05 pmI bet you’ll love it.sweetandsour wrote: ↑Tue Jun 19, 2018 8:39 pmI recently found a good deal for a copy of McGuane's "The Longest Silence" on line, and it arrived today. I'll probably start going through it later on tonight.
I'm going through the stories slowly, sharing time with a recently purchased copy of Reiger's "Profiles of Saltwater Angling". It's the fifth, I think, Reiger book that i now have. He's another one who's waters run deep.
Personally though, I enjoy snow geese, and hate the carp metaphor. I dislike the one for sandhill cranes also, "sirloin in the sky".
Anyway, great book.

Another thing - he eats reindeer. Interesting, I thought. I looked on line for reindeer steak, and it's available, but my wife won't hear of it.sweetandsour wrote: ↑Fri Oct 12, 2018 10:24 amMcGuane is a great writer and tremendous wordsmith. "Agape and Hesed-Ahava: With Levinas-Derrida and Matthew at Mt. Angel and St. Thomas (A Doxology of Reconciliation)" by David Goicoechea
I've loved this book's showing of how Jesus bridged (or welded together) the two Jewish loves of hesed and ahava by way of his version of agape. It uses scripture and key Jewish ethics writing by postmodern philosophers Levinas and Derrida. I got it 10/06, started 10/07, and I'll be done 10/15. It's really helped me be a good Mennonite.

I'm simultaneously reading others (as usual), but this is my main one.
"Cross and Khôra: Deconstruction and Christianity in the Work of John D. Caputo"
Once I finish this one, I'll share the next on my main track.
