ok, here it goes...John-Boy wrote:What are the reasons? Eh? Why? Eh? Share!!thebreadline wrote:i am currently alternating between "re-imagining preaching" by doug pagitt and "messy spirituality" by mike yaconelli. both books are amazing for different reasons.
the preaching book is amazing because pagitt suggests a move toward the older "dialouge" style of teaching the word, rather than the current standard of "speaching." after one or two attempts, it connects with the emerging folks WAY better.
"messy spirituality" is a short book that is perhaps the most liberating and clear look at grace and our place in it that i have ever read. stop reading this, get in your vehicle, and go buy it.

i am currently reading "Heaven Taken by Storm" by thomas watson and i am really just soaking it up. one of those books that i'm trying not to read too quickly! i'm also reading c.s. lewis' autobiography "suprised by joy" and i'm enjoying that as well. i love biographies and autobiographies.
i just finished John Frame's Doctrine of God (whew that was a big read) and the chronicles of narnia over christmas break.
my problem is that i don't have enough hours in the day to read, work, eat, sleep, play with wife and baby, and smoke a pipe, and work out (i'm training for a triathlon) and enjoy quiet time with God. i can't wait for heaven, when time will never be a problem because we will never run out of it!

For classes:
Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations
Robert Wuthnow's Restructuring of American Religion
Brand & Chaplain's Art & Soul: Signposts for Christians in the Arts
Johnston's Useless Beauty: Ecclesiastes through the lens of contemporary film
The Quiet Hand of God: Faith-based activism and the public role of mainline protestantism
Stephen Hart's What does the Lord Require: How American Christians think about economic justice
and many many others! Ughh!
But, they are really great texts despite the fact that I have little time to do much else with my life at the moment.
For myself:
Dostoyevsky's The Idiot
Jim Harrison's The Road Home
Elie Wiesel's Night
The funny thing is that I've been juggling tons of texts for some time now, so it doesn't seem overwhelming. Though, to look at the list, it seems like quite a bit, especially considering that the upper list will change next week as more texts will be assigned. Ah, academia. What a life, indeed.

Wow, I just started reading a text published by a prof. of mine that is fantastic, The Films of Krzysztof Kieslowski: The liminal image. It's subject is the work of the Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski. If you haven't seen his incredible series The Decalogue it's certainly worth the ten hours it will take you to watch it. It's abstract and difficult, but very worth it in the end. I just watched Bleu a week ago, and the depth and breadth of its exploration of the human experience of grief is truly amazing. Check out the latter movie if you get a chance and should you feel the need to explore some of the deeper meanings of the work, check out the book above.
Best,
Jeff

Current book: [If a Dog's Prayers Were Answered] BONES WOULD RAIN FROM THE SKY (Deepening Our Relationships With Dogs) by Suzanne Clothier. The title is taken from a Turkish Proverb.
