Probably the best rock band of all time. Well, not really a rock band. More like Mozart, or Beethoven.

Between them, really.
A Mach band.

Thanks Jo.
Those were good times. I remember the concerts. Or is this the acid?

El Santuario de Chimayo, February 1975
What is this?
A photograph taken inside El Santuario de Chimayo 42 years ago, suggestive of the Passion, but deliberately unclear and amenable to interpretation.

The chapel has become a tourist attraction in recent years, but back then it was off the beaten path; although, a lot of well-known large format Western photographers had photographed the exterior over the years.

Many devout believers made pilgrimages to the chapel. In a back room there is a muddy floor. The mud is believed to have healing properties. Many went there to pray, place the mud on their afflicted part and seek healing.

One room in the chapel was filled with crutches, canes, appliances and wheel chairs discarded by healed pilgrims.

Because it was not yet a tourist attraction and well off the beaten path, the chapel was not busy, nor overloaded with visitors. They didn't mind me photographing with a medium format camera and tripod. It may have helped that I was a believer.

Photographs are no longer allowed inside the chapel.

My wife recently visited with her sister. That's why I dug out the photo. I was saddened to learn that the area is now overrun with tourist busses, shops and eateries. Somehow, the sacredness of the place seems trampled. I'm glad I was able to be there before all that.

Thanks, sir. I at first thought it was a mummified corpse of a nun. Striking.
