I rotate between Costco Kirkland Columbian Supremo Fine Ground Dark Roast and Don Fransisco's Columbian Supremo. This morning it was Kirkland's. Both pair very well with the Gawith Hoggarth, & Co. bulk flake tobaccos I love, Brown Flake (unscented), Scotch Flake, & Best Brown #2

I have been working my way through the Raven’s Brew brand coffee from CupOJoes. However I am a big fan of their House Blend.

Three Peckered Billy Goat is my currently opened one.

Folgers 1850 Lantern Glow Fire-Roasted Coffee; Syphon brewed

Image

Continuing from where we last left off, I broaden my organoleptic horizons with "Lantern Glow". For some reason, I keep wanting to call this "Lamplighter". And which, offhand, seems a better name. But, a bean by any other name and all that. I should mention that I had a hard time sourcing this blend. I'd almost despaired of finding it, even thinking that Folgers had discontinued it or even that it was an urban legend or cipher — the chimerical product of a diseased mind obsessively chasing gustatory ghosts.

But nay. The squonk was sacked.

To get down to brass tacks, this pretty much met my prefabbed expectations, which — for the absentminded or the amnesiac — were set in the last exciting episode. To recap: "And though it is difficult to tell without a head-to-head throwdown (and which, even then, might be beyond my skillset's current keenness), I would almost contend that Black Gold has the exact same flavor profile as Pioneer, yet roasted to a darker shade." Aye. Lantern Glow seems, for all intents and purposes, a preternaturally instantiated, lighter shade of Pioneer Blend. Which makes it fascinating, uncanny and delicious all in one hot sip. This "Fire Roasting" process — a technologically obsoleted technique resurrected by Folgers — is a true treasure and the coffee lover should offer endless hosannas to Folgers for contributing to the cultural, historical, and aesthetic fabric of American life. For general observations on this process, see my review for Pioneer Blend.

One caveat. The bag copy notes this blend as being "Crisp" and "Bright". Bright, I get. Yes, it is somewhat bright, carrying a certain subdued soupçon of acidity through the silky shroud of fire-roasted richness. However, certainly not "bright" in the vein of a conventionally-roasted, Central American or Kenyan coffee of comparable shade.

But "Crisp"? Not so much. The flavor is round and rich, resonating on the tongue like a reverberant gong. There are no cutting-edges in the finish with which I would readily associate crispness. But such is a minor nitpick.

Get 'em. Try 'em. Find the blend you like and stick with it. Or not. You should like 'em all. They are that good. Or at the least, they are unique, valuable, and currently, irreplaceable.

$6.95/12 oz. at Giant Eagle Supermarket
