You sound like me, I haven't had a real station set up since our first child was born and he just turned 28. Plus when you play with radios every day there's not a lot of motivation. Congrats on getting back on - you may notice some things have changed since you were on before.
Yeah... I lost 500 watts of PEP and part of the 220 band. :(

Seriously, there are some cool things going on with digital modes, and I know that we got three new HF bands. Until I actually get back on, though, I won't know what it really sounds like.

So what do you do with a ham radio? What's the appeal? Also why such strict licensing?

For me, it is a step toward some basic radio theory, some basic electronics, and FCC regulations. I intend on studying and engaging in ISS communication and bouncing (and catching) signals off of the moon. I will probably enjoy learning and listening to CW communication but I am focusing on just learning more about radios and building radios. Getting a Technician's Class will hopefully get me access to the local club full of Elmers. I plan to keep studying up to Extra Class.

However, most folks have different interests than that. Many like to be civic minded and help out in natural disasters. Quite a few, in Lubbock, are preppers. Some like the TV aspect, others the data transmission, and still others like the contests. Heck, many just like talking with folks all over the world,

My favorite contacts have been the space station and a research station in Antarctica from Alaska on 5 watts power.

Studying for my technicians license using the 3rd edition ARRL Manual.

Looks easy, should be able to ace it.

Trying to think of a vanity call sign, coming up empty so far.

Even so - the call needs to be vacated and available for reassignment.
