Ah, makes sense that they recommend a gun oil to protect the finish...

What's the deal with the SFI ? I thought things were to be improving, I actually had a few minutes to get on the air other day when the index was at 70 and made a contact with New Zealand with 5 watts but overall it looks like things have been hit and miss for the most part.

It was a cruel trick. :(

Nobody can predict these things with any certainty. Solar Cycle 25 has definitely shown signs of waking up, but how quickly and how high it will rise is anybody’s guess.

I’ve been here before, but I’ve never experienced a cycle this low for this long.

80m and 40m are good at night, if you can handle the static crashes. Give them a shot.

Hadn't done much more than listen occasionally the past few weeks (school is taking more time than I'd expected). I finally had a little time to turn on the transmitter. Just worked EA8BWL (Tenerife Island, Canary Islands - truly beautiful place!) on the first call on SSB. He gave me a 57. Nothing is booming in, but some Europeans are coming through here.

Image

Image

Then went to CW...

Got ZB2FK (Gibralter) on CW. Not terribly strong. We exchanged 559s.

And, oddly enough, in the opposite direction, JM7OLW (Fukushima, Japan) right at my noise floor - below S1, then JH1GEX (Yamanashi, Japan) better at S5 but deep QSB.

Finally (before going in for dinner) VK2GR, Allan (Ulladulla, Australia), a bit louder than Japan.

I'm running 500W and doubt I'd have had any of these QSOs without some power.

You might try 20m if you're around, Jo. Hope you're not in fire danger and the smoke isn't too bad where you are. Japan and the Pacific might be booming in there soon!

I just read a news brief that reported solar scientists are about to peg the bottom of solar cycle 24 as having occurred this past December. We're in cycle 25. Things should start getting better.

Woot! Great stuff, Steve!

Hoping that cycle 25 is not as quiet as they say it may be, also hoping to get baxk on the air soon.

My G5RV survived the major windstorm we had last week.

Did you see the ISS put up an FM repeater ? Pretty cool.

Tnx OM, wish it paid better.

Worked Japan a few more times recently, (including another pirate) and finally got Chile in the logbook, WOOT WOOT

Now trying to figure out if I will need to apply for WAS in a Hybrid manner, not everyone uses LoTW, just doing some homework as I still need a few more states.

Have you nabbed and good DX lately?

Nothing new recently, Jo.

I was going to have a big announcement about a new set of paddles, but Begali’s payment system is messed up at the moment and I’m having trouble completing the purchase.

Bruna hasn’t gotten back to me so I don’t know where we stand.
I’ll update here when I know what’s going on.

While I'm not a Hamster or a conspiracy theorist or a cold-war spook, articles like this tend to catch my eye when they pop up:

The ghostly radio station that no one claims to run
In the middle of a Russian swampland, not far from the city of St Petersburg, is a rectangular iron gate. Beyond its rusted bars is a collection of radio towers, abandoned buildings and power lines bordered by a dry-stone wall. This sinister location is the focus of a mystery which stretches back to the height of the Cold War.

It is thought to be the headquarters of a radio station, “MDZhB”, that no-one has ever claimed to run. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, for the last three-and-a-half decades, it’s been broadcasting a dull, monotonous tone. Every few seconds it’s joined by a second sound, like some ghostly ship sounding its foghorn. Then the drone continues.

Once or twice a week, a man or woman will read out some words in Russian, such as “dinghy” or “farming specialist”. And that’s it. Anyone, anywhere in the world can listen in, simply by tuning a radio to the frequency 4625 kHz.

It’s so enigmatic, it’s as if it was designed with conspiracy theorists in mind. Today the station has an online following numbering in the tens of thousands, who know it affectionately as “the Buzzer”. It joins two similar mystery stations, “the Pip” and the “Squeaky Wheel”. As their fans readily admit themselves, they have absolutely no idea what they are listening to.
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are not.

Finally was advised by Bruna just to order my key through the website and use PayPal. Got it ordered yesterday - then Bruna wrote to tell me they’re sold out again, but will have more ready to ship late next week. I get the feeling that after the Simplex, the Pearl in palladium finish base is their best selling key.

I also understand (from a Begali Facebook page) that shipping is being held up in Paris.

Sooooo .....

I have a Pearl set up like this one on the way:
