G-A's scorpion thread

Post by gaining_age » Thu Mar 08, 2012 8:45 am

G-A with mallet: 2
Scorpions: 0

I'm getting freaked out and now will be calling my pest guys to come treat specifically for scorpions.

I've only ever met one of them in person - a little black one on my living room carpet. I panicked and killed it, but then wished I had put it in a jar and taken pictures. They're rare around these parts.

No scorpion sightings today. Called exterminator last night and he gave me a heaping load of information.

I'm hoping the two I saw were not bark scorpions-- they may have been striped tailed ones.

He said a scorpion problem would be seeing about 20 over a couple days. I don't ever want a scorpion problem ;)

Scorpions are cool. Of course, that's easy for me to say since I live where they don't. I don't think I'd be too fond of them crawling around in my house. Of course, we do have the brown recluse and black widow. I've never seen a brown recluse. I've seen one black widow but it was a male and they don't bite. Maybe I should have posted this in the useless facts thread.

Saw my first and only scorpion on a scout camp-out in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Gaaahh!! I didn't even know we had those beasties here.

I checked in my sleeping bag that night, and looked in my boots in the morning, you bet.

In Pictures: 10 Delicacies To Try in Beijing

Giant scorpions

A traditional Chinese medicine doctor will tell you that scorpions have a potent medicinal value, but in Beijing they are skewered on sticks at Donghuamen night market, deep-fried in oil and sprinkled with spice. They are mainly munched by giggling overseas tourists who, unlike long-term residents, don't shy away from the $7 asking price.

When we first moved into our newly built house around 30 years ago, there were scorpions all clinging to the walls. Scary to be sure. At least 5-10 around the house.

Thought we were in for a never ending pest problem. After killing those initial pests, never saw another one. Must have come in with the building materials.
