In another thread I mentioned that I will be building my own AR 15 with friends who are also building their own, but I have some things to post that aren't in line with the Gun Control Free Zone.

As to building the AR15, I must admit that I'm not feeling super enthusiastic about it. From it's inception, the gun was designed for use with a pistol grip and detachable magazines. Of course there are a few places like California that for right or for wrong have been passing "assault weapon" legislation that has some practical applications on this project and firearm. But basically, in a nutshell, I must chose between a "featureless" gun that includes regulations prohibiting pistol grips or I can choose to have "features" at the expense of normally detachable magazines. Neither option is good for this platform. If I really want a semi auto centerfire I might better just buy a Ruger Mini 14 which was designed "featureless" to begin with. I can still shoot 10 round magazines like normal and that gun's ergonomics work fine without a pistol grip. While there are some pretty nifty work arounds that break open the receiver of an AR type weapon for a "featured" rifle pretty quickly and easily that make them legal here without registration, I can nevertheless see problems and complications the moment a jam takes place, and jams will take place with an AR. It will drive me insane! I was trained on the M16A2 and these setups are anathema to proper use and handling of that type of rifle. Why have a rifle like this if it's only good for informal paper punching and shooting tin cans? I have attractive lever actions for that, and they aren't likely to jam! I do believe California has successfully outlawed the AR this time. The AK runs into the same basic set of problems.

Perhaps I ought to accept the limitations of the age and the will of California on this and simply forget it. I understand what they're trying to do, but honestly, if these rifles are still being made and sold in this state or country for that matter, it's a piece of cake for a person who doesn't follow the rules to put whatever features on the gun that they want anyway. Meanwhile, those of us who follow the rules have a stupidly engineered set of features that make no sense on this platform. I won't even get into the future of 3D printers and guns.

Another option is to make this into a rimfire rifle that will basically permit the features and the normal magazine releases. But then again, why? There are better platforms for rimfire rifles than the AR.

I'm old, and never trained on an AR platform rifle.
I absolutely understand the attraction for those who did.

But my response to building one with the restrictions you have is the same as yours, "Why?"

The Mini 14, based on the Garrand action, is familiar to me and therefore more attractive, and as you know if you want the rifle for deer as well as plinking it's available in 7.62X39 as the Mini 30.

The choice for those of us who live in states where your California restrictions don't apply is largely one of taste, familiarity and intended use, but I agree with what I'm reading between the lines in your post. You got into this project more for the sense of brotherhood among your local gun fraternity than any attraction to the AR platform.

I guess you have to decide which is more important to you.
If it were I, I'd go for the Mini 14 or 30, or look for a nice M1 Garrand.

No doubt, this is generational as much as anything else.
I love my Garrand. My son loves his AR.

He shot nothing but bolt-action rifles as a child, but after his time in the service he chooses the AR.

You're right, a lot of this has to do with the brotherhood aspect of things. And some of my brothers are very unhappy with "big brother" right now over the new restrictions passed last year here. This is as much motivated for protesting than anything for some of them. Anyway, we have a little time to legally mill a receiver now before mandatory registration begins next year. But for me, it's too little too late anyway because we still will have a gun poorly engineered by legal requirements already in place. It will either handle poorly because it doesn't have a pistol grip, and that gun really does need a pistol grip, it was designed for it. Or we need a system to fix the magazine in place. The former option destroys the good handling, the later destroys the reliability for appropriate AR sport shooting and assault or defensive purposes. I simply wouldn't take a fixed magazine AR to a gunfight, they're too hard to clear a jam that way. The same problem makes the rifle uncompetitive for action shooting too. In other words, if I'm going to have an AR, I don't want to be a Nancy about it. I want one that works as intended!

Sig Sauer beat out Glock by more than $100 million on Army handgun bid
Then the two designs were judged competitively on eight factors as well as price. On seven nonmoneteary factors, the Sig offering, a version of their popular Model P320, was found to be “acceptable” in one category, “good” in three, and “outstanding” in three while the Glock, by comparison, was found “acceptable” in one, “good” in five, and “marginal” in one.

Guess what? Glock will go boom every time.
