I found a used Ruger No 1 in 300 Winchester Magnum. $500 in very good condition. I want it so bad.

That’s a fine rifle at a very good price.

I had a No. 1 once upon a time. I sold it and have wanted another ever since. One of my worst gun decisions.

Bad timing. It would normally be a no brainer, but times have changed. Besides, maybe I need to actually get out to hunt more before I get another gun I don’t need.

Also, it has a muzzle brake, I’m not a fan of those. The fact that it’s a 300 Win mag means to me elk, and elk means time I don’t have yet, and elk, along with brown bear, are two critters I want a repeater to hunt with.

It’s a good thing it isn’t some sort of 6.5, 270 or 7mm or else I would get myself into trouble with the misses.

I spent about 500 bucks to get a gas ram air rifle outfit not too long ago.

Which rendition was it? How did it shoot for you?

All I know is that this 300 balanced perfectly for me off hand. Not too front heavy or front light. Had a nice old Redfield wide angle 3-9x40 scope.

I don't remember all the details. It was an early 80s production in a 30-06. It was very comfortable to hold and shoot and felt solid and sturdy. I don't recall any negative impressions.

I've read criticism of the No 1's accuracy over the years, but I had good results with mine.

A possible lead free replacement for my flat nose lead bullets in the 45 Colt.

That is one mean looking bullet. They also make a higher velocity, lower penetration version too. I got to try these! The things we must do to overcome lead restrictions and the innovation being done to do it.

Don’t look at the price Hovaness.

I watched some gel testing of the ARX polymer bullets and started carrying them in my .380 micro guns. The increased velocity due to lighter bullet paired with a design to convert that velocity into penetration along with energy to target transfer makes a .380 micro gun a reasonable carry choice. I still prefer a good jacketed lead hollow point for everything else I carry though. Something this costly would have to be a carry load. I avoid choosing any ammo I could, Heaven forbid, potentially use in a defense situation. "Extreme penetrator" looks like something a prosecutor would love to use in a trial.

250 grains is a respectable weight for .45 Colt where lead bullets generally run 250-255 grains. I'd sure try 'em for hunting if I had a .45 Colt!

In CA we can shoot bad guys with lead, but animals require something non-toxic.

I bet if you thought that one through, you'd see why.

As to that original bullet--that thing is terrifying! 55 dollars for fifty! Wow. I couldn't afford to train with it.

The price is obscene, but I’m getting used to it. I already use Barnes copper hollow points in my 45. But I practice with lead, I shoot just enough copper to sight in and know the trajectory, that’s it. The interesting thing about the Lehigh bullets above is that they are like an evolution of hard cast semi wadcutters with wide meplates. Bullets like that kill by disrupting tissue better than round nose ball ammo, but penetrate deeper than expanding bullets.

My 45s are intended for the outdoors, hunting and such. Deep penetration bullets like those aren’t right for most civilian urban carry or home defense in my mind. I suppose it might work against windshields quite nicely though in the event a madman is using his car as a weapon. Which by the way was something I have been mighty close to witnessing once.

Once you get into the .44s and .45s, most guys train with handloads using cast lead.
